Illinois...

I posted in the emergency forum but only go one reply. I am hoping someone on this forum can help. here was my post:
I have 6, 3 week old chicks. All 6 act fine eat, drink and run around. My RIR has a discharge coming out of her vent.
The chicks are in a 3 by 6 brooder with a heating plate. They are eating medicated grower feed. They have been give the yolk from hard boiled eggs; and this week I started to offer chick grit other than that they have had no treats.
Originally I had 2 chicks with pasty but including the RIR. The other chick is fine but the RIR has had a discharge for a week. I have attempted to put olive oil on it. All that seemed to happen with that was it caused her to peck at her vent. I soaked her in epson salt last night. Her poop looks normal so not sure what is causing the discharge.
Any ideas what may be causing this and what I can do to help her?View attachment 1315447
I have no idea about the vent discharge, but it sounds like you're doing everything right. Separating the chick will contain a possible illness. (in case it's diarrhea or something) Epsom salt helps reduce swelling. If she's eating & drinking, then there's no need to cull. More of a wait & see. I only cull when I know an animal is suffering or if I don't see a happy ending to an injury or severe birth defect.

Hang in there.

Oh no definitely try some nutridrench if you have it.

Are you sure the oegb has been eating? Sometimes I find they have trouble with all but the smallest crumbles.

Of course I know you're a hatching and chick raising expert. I hope the little isnis just a failure to thrive.
It's still alive, but definitely not eating. Seems to push on legs to stand very tall & walks backwards a little. It can run & walk but more wobbly. I tried soften chick feed but I just haven't seen it eat. All I can do is get it to sip some water with sav-a-chick (electrolyte powder) and Poly-vi-sol (infant vitamin drops).

Hello! Chicago, Illinois over here. I'm sure I've posted in this thread before, but I'm now in need of a favor from a neighbor! I'm starting eggs on Tuesday with my son's class, and the egg turner I thought I had secured from a friend is MIA! If anyone in the Chicago area has an automatic egg turner that I could borrow for this hatch, I would be very grateful, and give you first pick of the fancy chicks that we will have in a few weeks! ( Chance of frizzles, sizzles, showgirls, silkies - all mixed smallish varieties. Maybe even a few bantams. ) I'm in Woodlawn, southside. Thank you for any leads on a last minute egg turner!

Mine's in use right now, otherwise I'd let you borrow it. If you end up not getting one, you could try making egg carton turners. I actually have better hatch rates when I use them. Go figure!?! For those 2 weekends, try to get into the classrooms once a day for turning. (Or wrap up the incubator in blanket and bring home if you live less than 20 min away.)

Basically, you cut off the egg carton lid & each bottom circle. Then attach a cylinder down the middle that's the same length as the egg carton. I used my kids' wooden blocks and also a piece of PVC pipe. Zip ties work great to attach the cylinder. Anyway, all you do is gentle tilt to one side & done. All 12 eggs turned at once which means very short time of open incubator.

The 2nd pic is how I keep the chicks separated at hatch. My family calls them my little chick jail cells.

@Faraday40: At home I have a similar method, involving a book under the incubator! :D I put eggs in the cartons, and then I put a book under one side of the incubator. I move the book every few hours to another side, and shift the carton once a day or so. This way, I don't have to open the incubator very often. But - in a class of 3-5 year olds, I would rather not have to worry about it. But I will be there at drop off and pick up so I'll just have to rotate them as much as I can by hand until I can order one if I can't find one at the feed stores this weekend.

An update on my girls. We went on vacation for the week and my brother housesat (and petsat) for us. All 5 chicks nearly doubled in size (again) while we were gone. Also, no more dirty butts thankfully. However, the chicks have learned to jump/fly out of the brooder. One of the chicks was apparently found on the hood of my car. I really need to frame out a hood for the brooder - the wood and chicken wire are just sitting there waiting to be used.

@Molpet I think I might take you up on it! I haven't tracked any down near me. Would be around Monday during the day or in the evening? You can PM me! Thanks! Happy Easter!

Love the pic, & yes, they're getting bigger! I'm surprised they didn't learn how to escape sooner. Mine usually hop out during week #2 if I don't have a lid. That's why I always tell the teachers not to keep chicks past the 1st week.

However, your chicks seem to be even more advanced. Make sure to hide your keys before the little ones learn how to drive themselves to the feed store for treats.
