Illinois...

It was a HOT one today! (about 95'F) Hard to believe it snowed last month....

The Spitz & Dom were fine, but the poor Orps were not happy.

This orp & dom are BFFs. The dom wanted to play, but the orp just wanted to lay around.

Last time I peeked in on this board, there were very very few folks over here. May I join in the fun?!
Have been keeping chickens in DuPage since 2010 - got tired of running to Walgreens for more eggs every other morning (teen boys). Figured I could run to the backyard instead! Raising Black Java's from Garfield Farm Museum (LaFox). Added Swedish Flower Hens last year and love 'em so much I'm thinking of switching breeds. At least SFH's you can tell who's who based on color and pattern! Java's - well, not so much! There's a black hen, oh, and there's a black hen with chicks, and there's a black hen.....we used colored zip tie bands very well until this past winter - when one of the hens pecked ALL the red bands off EVERY hen. So now I'm not sure who's who any longer. :he Darn chickens.....!
Welcome! Glad to have you along for the ride!
I just picked up a couple of Java chicks last weekend. I like a variety as well, right now my top hen is a swedish hen. We're always expanding the flock!

I need some advice... My white leghorn is laying double yolk eggs every day. Should I be concerned?? The eggs are huge and she hasn't missed a day!
I've had hens do that when young. Give her a good diet & enjoy while they last. Things tend to normalize in 1-3 months. They only down side is that she could have issues with her reproduction system later in life.

I have had a couple that laid double yolks their first year...

of course these were ones I wanted to hatch eggs from.. decided I didn't need any more that laid doubles so I didn't hatch from them.. I think LOL

So what color would you call this orp below? (Ignore the marker on head) It feels like I traveled back in time & hatched Oopsie all over again. (Oopsie looked mauve at hatch but feathered in white.)

I thought this chick came from my blue silver laced orp female - who was in with my SLO. Could be very, very light blue silver laced orp.....

OR

The chicks move around a lot after hatch, and perhaps I marked her incorrectly when I moved her into the brooder. I also hatched Jewel's eggs (Oopsie's daughter) in the same incubator. I had 2 blk/lav splits mating her, and one of them is a cousin. I may have confirmed that both Jewel & her cousin carry Oopsie's rare recessive white gene.

Eeek!!!! Well now you have to hold on to that chick to see if its female!

and here are a couple more English orps from the last hatch:

Absolutely I'm sure I'll take more a bit later in the season. Let me get all these Yahoos raised up a bit first and out of my porch. LOL if I brought home more right now I think DH2B would leave me.

TE"Faraday40, post: 20022294, member: 230376"]BTW- I'm only partially joking. I have a lot of broody hens trying to repopulate the world with more chickens. A little over a doz eggs will go into lockdown tonight. (These were supposed to be my gold laced orps, but only 1 egg was fertile. Black, blue, lav, & silver laced orps are still nice.) Then I have my rogue broodies who are due to be hatching June 9th. Lastly Trouble (name says it all) went broody but 3 in a nest would br too crowded. I decided to have some fun & gave her some turkey eggs. Technically the turkey eggs are divided up among the 3 hens, but I'll move them later once I know if they're developing.[/QUOTE]

You certainly do have a ton of broodies!

Almost forgot...
Here's DD & her silkied serama - now named "Teddy Bear" or just "Teddy." DD wants to keep him of course. I sure hope he does doesn't crow loud or frequently. So far (12 wks old) no attempts.

Aww Teddy is so cute and tiny!

Well the broody hatch yesterday was 50% live this morning, 3 turkey and 3 chicken.. out of:
6 turkey eggs: 2 brown and 2 yellow hatched.. one yellow died the first day.. one yellow zipped halfway and died. So far all the deaths and not hatching have been yellows.

6 chicken eggs: one yellow and 2 blk or barred (not sure yet), one egg is missing..

I put the unhatched turkey and 2 chicken under another broody incase they are slow hatchers, no external pipps so I don't have much hope.
