To say I have supportive neighbors is an understatement. They donated supplies, helped build our coop, chicken-sit when we're away, bring kitchen scraps to feed the birds, buy up our extra eggs, take our chicken manure, and then bring their guests over to visit when we have chicks (especially the grand-kids). When we started out 6 years ago, we went to every neighbor near us & told them about our daughter's 4H project ideas. Back then there were no laws about roosters - just a vague noise ordinance - and of course the 4H kids were permitted to keep small animals like chickens and rabbits. Some of the original neighbors have moved or passed away, but every new neighbor has been welcomed with fresh eggs and baked goods. I simply ask that if they have a problem to let me know in person so we can work together for a solution. I'd rather get rid of some chickens than have an unhappy long-term relationship with those who live near us. All of our past & current neighbors are amazing!

Over the past 22+ years, they have been a network of eyes watching out for my dogs, kids, and now chickens. My kids get spoiled with an excess of holiday candies & gifts from all the grandmothers on our street. Even our former dogs knew which neighbors carried treats in their pockets for them. LOL In return, I love to garden, cook, & share what we have. Who doesn't like a cup of home-made chicken soup in the winter or some garden tomatoes in the summer?

This year DD decided to do a non-chicken related sci fair project: Let's Shake On It. She tested to see if more dogs are right pawed or left pawed.

The final count on the paper was 22 pages, and the glue is still drying on the poster. Everything's due tomorrow. I wonder how many of her classmates will be pulling an all-nighter....

I had to toss one of my quail eggs last night. :(
I checked the incubator and noticed a shell was cracked really bad. Fortunately this egg didn't develop. I was also fortunate to find that the membrane hadn't broken, just the hard shell. The membrane held in the contents of the egg. I guess it was going to get tossed anyway... I didn't see any blood ring or any other signs of harmful bacteria. I'm hoping the crack didn't somehow cause a spread of any bacteria, fungus, other nasty things that could harm the developing embryos.

I'm not sure,,,,,, but I think the bad bacteria comes into play when there is a lot of it. Like an exploded egg. :idunno
I made a point to lift the lid and let the fan blow a lot of air out of the incubator incase there's anything that was airborne. It dropped about 4 degrees but bounced right back within 30 seconds.
