I do not have a pic sorry. Passed away over night and I already disposed it. I cannot even find a pic via Google of a similar chick. Essentially the feet were missing right at the joint you would normally remove them during processing. Each leg ended in a stub with one small nail that curled back. Of the chick were to eventually walk it would be walking on the nail since it curled back over the stub.

I figured it was dispose of... unless you can retrieve it... I was too freaked out to think about a pic
So sorry this happened. Hopefully it was a one time thing. I doubt you want to try some more eggs. But Faraday40 has some hopefully.

I would be willing to try more if some of Faraday's hatch well. Its possibly an incubator issue. I don't know.

I think it's an inbred issue as far as stumpy. The not hatching could be a humdity issue. Do you have a separate meter that checks the temp and humdity? The incubators are notorious for being wrong

I checked the incubator for accuracy when we first got it and it was pretty spot on. That was about 6 months ago. I have not checked it again. temp seems fine since chickens are hatching right on time. Humidity may be the problem; however, I had the tray completely full of water during lockdown and there were droplets all over the plexy window on the top of the incubator. I'm not sure the humidity could be any higher than it has been.

Maybe I should consider turning the fan off during lockdown and then not dropping the temp since it would turn into a still air incubator which needs to run a degree or two warmer anyway. My thinking here is that the fan may be drying the incubator out. However, humidity was steadily readying 60-70 unless I misted, which would shoot it up because the sensor would gt drops of water on it from the spray bottle.

I'm considering ordering from them. They seem reasonable and it will only cost $6 to have birds shipped as long as I'm willing to order 9+. Thinking about just ordering some BBB poults from them. It would give us a start in raising turkeys this year and then I may switch back to a heritage bird next Spring.

She also advertisers opal legbars but said she's having some fertility issues this year. They are and Isabel Leghorn and cream legbar cross.

My hatch is not exactly going great... once turkey hatched and died minutes later. Another turkey hatched with no feet - just one nail protruding from each ankle. It is still alive, but I imagine is not going to make it too long.
A chicken hatched and is in the brooder with the footless turkey. There are several other pipped eggs and one currently zipping. Most of the action is with the chicken eggs though. These turkeys better come on.

I checked it like 24-30 hours later and was planning to help it but it had passed. When I opened the egg I was totally shocked. It was completely missing one of it's legs and the other leg may have been deformed.

The rest of the eggs hatched and we're all just fine.

I will insert the photos of the chick in a post following this one and try to be sure it is surrounded by warnings as I can't make a hidden post.

Glad I didn't sell any... how horrible no feet. Kind of hard to stump around.

I read that too. However, I didn't have any problems. It could have been beginners luck. Turkeys are not very bright & tried to kill themselves a few times - like climbing into a feeder & getting stuck. Of course after saving her, she did the same thing the very next day. I think they were a little slow to learn how to drink using a chicken nipple. Thankfully I had a patient broody hen.

The 1st poult hatched this evening at the preschool. It has a red navel, so I wrapped it in a wet paper towel in hopes that it will stay quiet & heal up a bit before walking. It's very, very large. White with hints of gray lines. Phoenix's egg also hatched (from @homeschoolin momma) It's the smallest chick. It's whole little body is about the size of the giant turkey's head.


The experiment turkey egg stayed in the coolerbator here, but I slipped the other extra one under "Cookie." Poor Cookie has been sitting on rocks for 2 weeks. (decorative marble eggs) As soon as she got the turkey egg, she started talking to it. She's much happier now and I know she could tell. Anyone have an idea how hens can tell if an egg is good or bad? They somehow just "know it."

No live poults so far. Stubby died overnight. No more hatches.

We did get 1 more chicken over night. We now have 4 chicks.

I did a quick candling on all remaining eggs. I am hopefully for 2 of the Turkey eggs but it is late now so not sure. Just leaving them in the incubator.

What colors are the poults and chicks?
I was so horrified by stumpy I forget to even think about it.

The huge poult at the preschool is white. I think there may be a hint of gray lines. I believe it will be OK. I started my eggs on a Wed - assuming they'd hatch a day early which is today. I did not expect that one to hatch 2 days early, and that could be why the navel was red at hatch.

The teacher at the preschool loves to handle the chicks. I believe that's why our silly Leghorn is so calm. She keeps them for a week, holds them throughout the school day and also brings them home over the weekend. By the time they come here, they are so people friendly. I can only imagine how clingy that poult will become......

We have a chick party going on in the Coolerbator. Many have hatched. DS slept in a sleeping bag on the floor next to the incubator.

We got out our coolerbator last night and set 13 more turkey eggs since my phone is on the fritz and I'm not receiving text messages.

That brings our total turkey eggs set to 33 and I haven't found any in several days.

@Molpet I would be happy to give you a slate tom for genetic diversity if you'd like.

@Faraday40 if you end up with more calico poults that don't get claimed please let me know. I really would love more calicos.

That said everyone I do have some bad news. Yesterday morning we lost one of our two blue slate jennys. The one that had been broody. She was behind the door to the back side of our chicken coop and was just gone. I opened her up and saw what I think may have been liver lessons however she had no symptoms of black head at all and no muscle wasting. She had some damaged/raw skin on her side and her snood was also raw. I'm wondering if she got stuck behind the door couldn't figure out how to turn around and panicked causing a hear attack. Her ceca and the rest of her organs all looked great. She even had a decent fat deposit in her abdomen. she also had food in her crop when she passed. She never had any signs of anything wrong and the only thing that was different was that she was back on the roost that night. That said she only spent one night on her "nest" the rest she was on the roost. Hence why I never gave her eggs as she wasn't fully committed. I figured maybe the blizzard caused her to break.

I'm now worried about the rest of our turkeys and would appreciate any help possible.

If it is blackhead anyone have experience with it? Does it mean I need to get rid of all my turkeys? Can we breed for immunity? I love my turkeys and don't want to lose them.


In other news he other blue slate jenny jenny decided to scare the heck outta me last night when she wasn't in the coop at lock up. We searched the whole lot but to no avail. She was however outside the coop door this morning feeling sorry for herself. She's going to give me a heart attack. We may need to lock her up if she disappears again. You might want to rethink using christmas on the hens you got from faraday. He would be a brother... of if you get stumpies you know why

I have had 2 hens that laid eggs late and tried to stay on the nest, but I found them and shagged them back.. one time an egg popped out on the way back to the coop

I have the 12 that are due friday moved to broody turkeys
another turkey I gave 6 new to yesterday
and a chicken I stuck 6 under today. If one of the 4 other turkey hens go broody I'll move those over to her.

I have 2 other chickens that are broody
12 WLR cornish in the incubator that I think 2 may hatch and 3/4 of my own all due friday
11 W cornish that are due on the 8th. I haven't candled them yet
