Illinois...

If the eggs are not set yet, I'll be OK. We will be back for Easter, which is 28 days from today I believe. I believe our ducklings are supposed to come in around the week after Easter as well. It will be nice to have all the rearing done at once.

Whenever you're ready, let me know. I've got more than 2 incubators, so staggered hatch dates are not a problem.

Ha they haven't started laying yet. Next week or so. I seen a mating attempt feb 24th... I don't think it was successful but hormones are running high and they are noisy.

Did curbside pickup at TSC this morning. ...so I didn't get tempted by chicks, if they had any.

Dyna went across to the Rainbow Bridge.:( Almost made it to 2 years. From Faraday in 2019. No sign of trauma. She was acting normal all along, and not at bottom of pecking order. I'm down to 6 hens now.
Next week they will be going outside coop. I will be considering adopting a pair of hens. I always add in pairs or better. View attachment 2558968
Collected 3 eggs today. 1 from Wendy, 1 small from (not sure which bantie), and another fart egg. I suspect it came from Lonely, since she is sooooo tiny, I thing that is all she is able to express.:idunno
Sorry for your loss.
I usually lose a few when the temperature goes up and down
Lost one a week ago, 3 yr white CX mix

Going to try oral ivermectin . Just soaked her in permethrin yesterday. She looks worse because she is in garage for rehab and not getting any sun so the bugs aren't hiding.

I was just thinking..... chickens must understand their actual dangers better than we think. I had a circular saw out and was cutting wood and they didn't care. I had to shoe them so I could continue my cutting. They know building is not a real danger to them.. however if I walk towards them holding a grocery bag or box they run in terror.

Nice day today. Went to Farm and Fleet. No cocks just yet in the Lockport store, but they are all set up for them. I don't really need any more chickens anyway. Just ducklings and hopefully a few poults this year. After F&F, we went to lunch at Station One BBQ in downtown Plainfield and then we took the kids to Bass Pro in Bolingbrook just to bum around and see the huge fish tank and waterfall.
When we got home I cleaned the coop and the kids helped spread new bedding. Then each of them got to help plant a native plum that came in the other day from my Gurneys order. Lastly we hung a bird feeder out front that DS picked out at F&F.
On top of all that, I BOOKED A VACATION!!! We are going to explore the Everglades and the Florida Keys in a few weeks, road tripping there and back. 80+ temps should allow for lots of outdoors activities where we can remain socially distant. I'm really excited to take the kids to swim in the ocean and I think DS is going to freak when he sees gators - he's into dinosaurs right now and they'll be the closest thing he sees to a living dinosaur.

So much fun!!!!! I love alligators and Florida!!! I'm so excited for you!!!

I'm sorry😔

I made it to TSC yesterday without buying chicks so I sort of feel like a hero. But to be fair, they only had a few bantams. I was trying to avoid the whole area but I wanted to see these new brooders everyone's complaining about. I looked at them and they were dark and empty so I thought it was safe to look closer since it seemed like they didn't have any chicks in there yet. Then I heard the peeping. One sad lonely little section on the bottom had about 15 or so little peepsters. They seemed alert and okay unlike the ones I have heard other people finding in the new brooders. And none came home with me. Yet.

But I did buy some Gardstar poultry dust. Do I just dust their fluffy little bottoms with it or is it better to put it in the coop/run? Any caveats or tips?

Yep I can drive my tractor with a loader bucket, bagger 13 ft long, and they come running as soon as I stop.... They know grass is coming . I walk in with a feed, leaf bag or different color feed bucket and it's time to get away.... and the net is a panic attack.

Have you seen bugs? Usually people do both if they have bugs.
