Illinois...

and here are some not-so-good pics.

My modern game has developed a swollen hock joint. I'm sure she's hiding her pain because she's acting normally. However, it's been growing over the past several days.

Any ideas how to treat her?
Has anyone experienced something like this before?
Could it be an infection (like Bumblefoot)?
Is this what a slipped tendon looks like?
broken leg?

Will you post on emergencies/diseases? Let us know what you find out.

I have two silkie bearded boys. Hatched May 9th. Both almost black. Near Edwardsville, Madison County.

We set up a display at the school's annual "Trunk or Treat" .... chicken themed with a couple live hens of course.

In addition to the chicken costumes, décor and clothing, I made newspaper cornstalks. Each kid got a few chicken jokes before receiving candy. A few poultry related 4-H posters, trophies, signs and t-shirts were displayed. My fav was the nestboxes. The friends who know us well were able to name the chickens I drew in the nests. LOL DS set up his Chromebook and we had "Techno Chicken" playing on a loop. We were very popular and ran out of candy before the end. As a consolation, I let those kids pet and feed a chicken.

Sadly it drizzled and then rained so some of the decorations had to get put away early.

Glad at least part of the day was dry.

Had an interesting visit with @homeschoolin momma momma today.

The good part was seeing my friends, eating some birthday cake, and sweet puppy cuddles. The kids spent most of the day on the trampoline and should sleep well tonight.

We also visited a neighbor who bought some of my Orpingtons. I called to them and the chickens came running. I fed some mealworms and was thrilled to see them so happy. Then I noticed "Chaos" had an odd-looking ears. Chaos is appropriately named because she hates to be handled. Well she needed to be examined, so now we come to the educational portion of my day. After some flapping and a Google search, we figured out Chaos developed an ear canker. Never saw one before so we looked up how to treat and got it done.

We should have done before and after pictures of her ears so other folks can know what it is! Why didn't we grab an after picture!?!:barnie

Well I have the before pics ….
I never saw this kind of thing before so I figured I would be posting it on BYC for help.

An "after" pic would have nice. As usual we do what’s needed and then move on to whatever’s needed next. Just what moms do.

I forgot to mention the 'best' part.
After cleaning up Chaos, we put her in a cat carrier so her owner could bring her back home. As she was about to latch the door, @homeschoolin momma received a big, wet, smelly, liquid, projectile form of gratitude from Chaos. Yup. That fat, grumpy hen showed us exactly what she thought. And her timing and aim were perfect! Chaos got her hands, shirt and pants all in one! For some reason, it's always @homeschoolin momma who gets it. Even when we process cockerels, a carcass may get in one last shot of revenge on her.

Today it was announced that our family won 2nd place for our chicken-themed Trunk or Treat. And, guess what the prize was???

A 'Raising Canes' gift basket. We found it very amusing to win gift cards to a CHICKEN restaurant for a chicken-lovers display.
:lau :lau :lau

It's OK. We will enjoy the free meal. The kids are fine with eating chicken as long as it's no one they know.
