OK. This is the same silkie who is blind in one eye.
1) What type of bird , age and weight.silkie, around 8 mos old. weight... a few pounds.
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Not walking, when he does try to move his left leg sticks out at a horrible angle. Left leg is stiff and unresponsive, toes are curled up.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? he limped for a few days, but yesterday could not walk at all.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?yet again, no. This bird is the one who gets all sorts of problems (blind, never crowed, bottom of the order, etc.)
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.I cant tell about broken bones, but the bird makes no sound when i felt the leg in question.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. i was thinking he limped because he was blind on that side, but im not so sure now.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. eats layer, drinking water.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.I dont know...
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?isolated him, put him in a small cage within easy reach of food and water, but he doesnt move.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?well, he is blind, he doesnt lay eggs, and now he cant walk. a useless eater int he end

so i might take him to the vet and put him down.

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. Sadly, no. ill try to get one though.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use at night he slept on the roosting pole (or he did... now he is in that small cage on fresh hay.)

Could it be a sickness? i know there are a few illnesses that can paralyze?

Sounds like mereks...

For his sake I would have him put to sleep. Keep him far from other chickens while you are deciding what to do with him...

So sorry..

so, mereks? thats what i was afraid of... keep him far away from the other birds. how contagious is it?

I agree....I would have him put down. He is just suffering and that's not the way any creature should be. The decision is extreamley hard. I've been there and most other BYC'ers have been there. We can't feel exactly what you are going through because everyone is different but we can empathize.

A vet can do it for you and you can stay until he falls asleep or you can leave him with the vet. You have the option of taking home the body or the vet can take care of it for you.

This is a hard decision but you have to do whats best for him. Take care of yourself.

Ok then we will take care of him today. Noah, my little bro, is crying. Chad is his bird...

I'll be 44 tomorrow and every time I have to have one of my 'girls' put to sleep (not too often thank goodness) I sob like a baby. It's normal for us to get attached but we have to do what is best for our pets. They can't speak for themselves. Tell Noah I'm very sorry and he is a very brave little boy and he is doing the right thing. I'll keep him in my thoughts.

Tanichca: I am so sorry you have to go thru this... And your little brother. Some people can cull them at home but I think the best way for pet chickens is to be put to sleep by the Vet. Less stress for you and the chicken..

I have taken some pets to be put to sleep and brought them home and put them to rest...

And to answer your ? about mereks being contagious, yes it is. Especially if your other chickens have not been vaccinated for it.
