Illnesses, bullying..should I homeschool? Long rant

I could have written your post! Hope he is doing better now. My ds was also sick often in K,and dealt with bullying from day one. He loved school at first,but the bullying got to be to much for him.Nothing wrong with home schooling a child.I would do it now if my dh was not so set against it.

I'm not a parent but I am also saying you could homeschool. However, being that he's so young you MUST put him in alot of programs for kids his age and most importantly help him keep up the friendships outside of the sports, team or whatever you choose for activities.
I didn't read every post but I think you answered your own question in the last paragraph you wrote in your original post.

This socialization thing people always bring up is ridiculous! Mine have not done much outside the home and they are not social retards!! Period!! And anymore when people ask if I'm concerned about socialization I answer yes! When I see the videos of kids getting slammed around on buses and hit in the head with railroad ties, well darn tootin I'm concerned! And hello, but the whole point of school is education not socialization. I roll my eyes any more at that condern. Even teachers have told me I'm wise to homeschool.

No, but it might help prevent or shorten the frequent illnesses that are a large part of the OP's concern, and a part of her reason for considering homeschooling. Making fun of a very reasonable answer is rather disrespectful.

Most of the kids who who participate and win these kinds of competitions choose to do so.

you should research the studies on home schooled children versus public school children. Theyre far more likely to attend college, hold full time jobs, and in most cases have better social skills than public school children.

As far as socialization goes, unless you sit at home on you duckus all day staring at books you're going to socialize just fine. Theres homeschool groups, play groups, homeschool sports leagues, swim teams, HSA's field trips, camps, retreats, lock ins... and all with people and children who are emotionally more balanced and capable than the public at large.
Can we please not turn this into a "homeschooling is better/homeschooling is bad" thread. That was NOT the question. Both home schooled kids and school schooled kids can have poor teaching and socialization experiences. Or excellent. And everywhere in between.
We've each encountered different experiences in life that flavour our views on different topics, but that doesn't mean that one's own viewpoint is the only valid one.
Different states have different laws pertaining to testing and homeschooling. Saying that "this is the law" is only valid for the state you live in. For someone who lives elsewhere, the laws are different--maybe a little different, maybe a lot different.

Just because a child is homeschooled doesn't mean they are un socialized. I will agree there are some creepy sterotypical homeschoolers out there but most of us are completely normal and much better behaved and mature than public schooled kids.
The homeschool kids in my area are really socilized. They do classes together once a week, go skaing once a month, do a field trip once or twice a month. Have a youth night once a month, plus the 4'H meetings once a month. Oh don't forget the softball, basketball, baseball, volleyball teams.
Drama group, camping...
Add that up plus all the other activities. And your looking at LEAST having your kid being with other kids 2-3 times a week.

But the fact that people automaticly assume homeschoolers lack skills bug me. People just don't get all the information.
Oh Sonoran Silkies. In MO you have to turn in schedules and hours of schooling.
IL (my state) You don't have to do ANY THING at all. No testing, no turning in anything to the state. It's completely left to the parent.
But just to assure you we aren't just sitting around pretending to do schooling here in IL. My family state tested this year and was above and beyond normal.
Homeschooling is a GREAT choice! But you may decide it is better to give your child some vitimins and let him learn the basics at school. Maybe compromise. Let him go to school for like 2-3 years.
