little chicks they are so cute!

I actually think it is 57.....there definitely is an extra cochin, and an extra RIR, but I think there are a couple others missing that should've been....I think maybe an EE short, and either brown leghorn, or speckled sussex short. It's hard to tell what is what on some of them that look similar.

I did go through and hand count them though to be sure how many were there. lol

lol well im a crazy bird woman! lol i have 48 or so right now...
30 Cornishx
8 GSL
9 silkies

oops thats 47 lol
and i have 15 more comeing this week!!! YAY! just more silkies and some EE

Wow, that's alot of chicks to keep track of. You say you are getting back into raising chickens, so is this just the beginning with more to come later? They are too cute at this age to resist the temptation to get more.

When I was just a little girl, my Grandpa told me to count the cattle as they came through the gate. He was a cattle rancher.

Of course I couldn't. So he told me that the way to count cattle is to count the legs, and then divide by four.

The same system is good for chicks. They are hard to count, but you just count the legs, and divide by two.

Good luck.

I am new to posting on here but feel as if I have been lurking for months! I started with a few birds and didn't believe you all when you said how addictive it is! I just was gifted 56 chicks at the Wolf swap meet, they were soaking wet Cuckoo Maran chicks and the man said they would die before he could get them home and would I take them since I lived nearby? Now they are living in my spare bedroom peeping up a storm! I can barely sleep through their peeping and when they stop I freak out and have to go check on them!

They are cute when they're little....I think I'll be glad when they get grown though. lol

One of the marans chicks has something kind of like a "skin tag" on the back of its head that the other chicks saw and started picking at (I hadn't noticed anything until they had started picking at it and had the fluff parted out).... I'm going to try to get some Blu-Kote today to put on it... I put some salve on it last night and this morning and tried to kinda give it a "comb over" to get some of its fluff slicked over it to cover the temptation slightly....doesn't work all that great... Much like kids, chicks can be so cruel.....LOL

Henpecked.. that's what all BYCers are is henpecked! Have fun and post pics of that brood as they grow so we can all oooh and ahh over them like a bunch of mother hens.

The little maran is not going to make it....it's just grown progressively weaker. It was to the point the other chicks were all walking on it and I don't think it will make it through the night, so I took it out of the brooder and put it in a box so at least it won't be trampled all the time for its last brief moments.
