I'm a eggcited newbie and thought I'd share! Opinions!

I really like it too! I will probably put wire on the inside of the bottom wood panels, just because I am TOTALLY freaking out over predators! I'd rather be safe than sorry.
I was wondering the same thing if their little feet could get stuck, hardware cloth at that size would just be way too expensive. I have to do this as cheap and proper as possible.

You mentioned you choose to free range. I would love to do this, probably only when I am out there with them though, I have RA so running from the house all the way to the back yard to ward off a critter doesn't sound like it would do my body good, lol.
But I am curious, do you leave your run door open so that during their free range they can grab food (I know they're eating in the grass, so probably don't even worry about feed huh?) and water when they want? Wouldn't day time critters run in and try to wait until the chickens come back in? I wasn't sure how to do this if I let them free range with me out there.

Ooh! Sounds like you have little snake charmers! Ha! I was reading in another thread someone used minnow buckets (the wire enclosed containers with funnel ends) to catch snakes! He used, you guessed it a few eggs for bait! It worked wonderfully! Poor person had copperheads! I loved this idea and filed in the back of my head for future reference!

You might try searching the BYC site for coop flooring ideas. In the meantime, hopefully you will get a response from someone who is much more experienced than me!
For my Guineas, I do leave their coop open during the day. They live in an old clay brick building that was built on our property around 1930. It has a concrete floor, so I lucked out with that. It's has 3 doors , so I leave 1 or 2 open during the day so they can get to food, water, nesting boxes, and roosting bars. I usually close off the coop entirely at night so they can't even get out to their run (except during summer when it's hot), because I've gotten paranoid about predators too! I've had raccoons in my yard recently and worry they will somehow get into the outside run. Plus, I know people who have had a problem with mink and weasels in our area lately, and the wire around my run is probably big enough for one of those critters to sneak through! Funny how you can get so attached to chickens, Guineas, etc! These crazy Guineas have gotten to be almost like my kids!
Sorry to hear about your RA. I know it can be pretty debilitating! I have lupus so I know those autoimmune disorders can be rough. Luckily, I am doing well. I hope your doing ok and that you get a lot of joy from your chickens!

Glad to hear that your Lupus is treating you well! Hope it keeps it up like that! Autoimmune stuff is definitely...for the birds! :D

Yes, I am scouring the forums right now! I keep getting lost in other threads and articles other than the originals LOL!

How neat! Your coop sounds neat! I just love old stuff like that, the history and the things it must have "seen"!

Yikes at the minks/weasels! Hope you don't have to deal with them. It is funny how we get attached to animals. I'm in love already and mine are just mere eggs that someone else is caring for!! (ordered from a hatchery) I have names picked out and everything! Oy!

Thanks so much for your advice! I will file it all away and mush everyone's in with it, hopefully I find what works for me without losing many birds in the process!

Yes! I am absolutely loving the look of that run! I showed it to him and he is on board! I am so excited! I'm sure ours won't look as nice, because to cut costs we will use cheaper woods at the bottom! But nonetheless!
