I used to put a piece of plywood in my cages just incase they wanted to go on it and rest their feet, they never really went on it so I stopped putting it for them, its nice to offer them a litter box with some dirt in it tho lets them have fun, but I would never ever house them on a solid flooring past 2 weeks age unless they're going into a flight pen or something. Even with my chicks and I cleaned their broofer every other day they used to get poop stuck to their feet and I'd be pulling it off I think myself and the birds both enjoy the wire cages over getting poo stuck to your feet.

Mine are also on wire bottom hutches....when i had them on a solid floor they started to get feet issues! AND sooo..i'm proud to be a hick also!!

If I HAD to cage all my quails inside i'd more than likely go the solid bottom route unless i found some nice professional cages that would work perfect for them (with wire bottom and slide out tray). My outdoor cages wouldnt look too pretty indoors lol.

the thing that annoys me the most about my indoor cages is the fact that I gotta clean them out daily, and in doing so theres somehow a trail of bedding EVERYWHERE afterwards so I then have to vaccume and some how I still dont suck it all up.. and I wanna scream

LOL. Right now my room looks great.... tomorrow is a different story LOL a never ending bedding saga! LOL

I have them both ways, and believe me, but the end of summer they ALL will be on wire. I have more problems with them walking in their own poo and then getting all sorts of feathers and Volkswagens stuck to their toes and them being lame because they can't walk straight.

I try to keep them clean, but YOU try rounding up a covey of bobwhites one by one to clean their toes...
My coturnix are housed on wire with no problems, and they stay cleaner than anything. Less expense when you don't have to supply shavings, too, and I don't have to sweep up kicked out shavings all the time. I'd like to put all my birds, including my ducks, on wire if I could...

haha speaking of ducks I have my two mallard ducklings daily out in a wire pen too I thought it would hurt their tootsies but they seem to really like it. They wont be on it for long ofcourse, but it's a clean place to keep them while I don't have an enclosed pen up for them yet.

Mine are too little to be on wire, but as soon as they are big enough...OUT they go into a cage with a hardware cloth floor. Good grief! These guys gys can churn out a lot of poop in a day. They are keeping me busy with daily pooper-scoopin now. I can only imagine how bad it would be once they got big.

I guess that makes me a soon-to-be hick!
