I'm afraid she won't make it :(

Technodoll--I am sooo sorry you are going through this! I had a bad feeling when I read the original thread.

When I saw the picture of the one hunched up in the background I thought "coccidiosis" but I didn't want to say it--that is why I said to get Corid (Sulmet is almost as good). Please get all the new ones away from your older ones, even though they have been exposed. The stress of being around new chickens will drive down their immune systems more. You can put them in your garage and keep them warm and cozy. Give them all a good once over and keep an eye on their poo. I would start them all on Corid or Sulmet if they are still looking hunched up like in that picture, and their poo doesn't look right. Keep us posted.

ETA--Faith is the one that looked suspicious, Sunshine is having problems?

yeah, the little hunched up one has maybe 40% of her feathers so she was freezing in that picture.

she's in the house now, warm and recuperating. not hunched anymore and poops are nice and firm, look and smell normal.

so I have two of the four new birds in the house, will check on the other two (the blue cochins) tomorrow and if they seem at all weird, they,re coming in too.

I sometimes feel as if I'm failing as a chicken mom because I have still so much to learn, and they are paying for my mistakes

Yes, Faith is the 12 week old wee one with most of her feathers missing. She's actually fine, a miracle she survived whatever beating her former flock gave out to have her so freaking naked. Boggles the mind. I dusted her for lice, just in case.

Sunshine is the one with the eye infection and a head full of lice and nits.

Well just nits now, the lice are dead and gone after a good dusting... nasty little sh*ts! LOL!

They're both in the house under quarantine and on meds... they are so sweet, it just breaks my heart.

Gosh, Technodoll. I'm sorry you're going through heartbreak and aggravation, but from my perspective, those birds are very very lucky. At least now they live with someone who cares enough about them to notice if something's wrong with them and to want to do something about it. And that person is smart enough to hook up with online friends who have a HUGE amount of knowledge to help her help them.

Whatever happens to your one sick sweetie, you made her life better, even only for a little while. She needed you and you came through for her. Without you, where would she be now?

ETA: And you're not failing as a chicken mom. You're a very wonderful mom! I have to repeat it: Where would those sweet girls be without you? If their former owners allowed Faith to get so beaten up, would they have noticed Sunshine's bloody stool or the swollen eye?

P. S. I missed this thread because I was in line 5 hours to get a swine flu vaccination then worked overnight. Then sleep/life stuff/family stuff....FINALLY BYC stuff.

your message made my heart swell!

i honestly don't think to have gotten a flock if not for BYC... the support, advice and encouragement has been absolutely phenomenal!

my two little sick EE's are faring better this morning after some rest, warmth, plenty of food, antibiotics and delousing - they did NOT want to be picked up this morning, feisty little things!

They're still violently and sporadically scratching themselves on the face with their feet and scratching their backs and wings with their beak, might it be dry skin from the delousing powder? I checked and don't see any live critters on them this morning, thank goodness...

Sunshine's left eye is still rheumatic, half-closed and foamy at times but her other eye seems to be getting better.

Poops are fine, they are eating and drinking so am

it's just a matter of time until their systems are normal again to fight any infections they may have.

This isn't what I had planned for but they're home now and I will do what it takes to give them long happy healthy lives!

Please let us know how they do over time. I'll bet they'll end up to be gorgeous girls! Then you can put "before" and "after" pictures up here and on your refrigerator.

I don't think it's important to make big splashy differences in the world, but to take the chances we're given to make a difference. You never know how far the tiny difference you make may ripple out into the world.

Very true, that...

I am a firm believer in karma and sometimes you just don't have a choice but to follow your heart.

Both girls ate the first "goodie" breakfast of their lives this morning, once they tasted mama's special mash they went crazy for it!

A spoonful of mashed canned dog food, a drizzle of olive oil, some boiled chick peas and some diatomaceous earth. I had to sprinkle some of their crumbles on top to get them going but they quickly got the hang of it

The cochins are doing brilliantly and are very brave (venturing outside for the first time of their lives) and very curious (eating real food for the first time), they quite like being petted and held, which is a miracle considering the environment they came from!

They are in the coop with the flock, in their own section so safe from being pecked on.

The EE's are getting better every day - knock on wood!

Sunshine's eyes seem to be fine now that the lice are gone and little Faith looks more like a baby vulture than ever, god bless her...

They are both shy and don't like to be approached but if I sit there and talk to them gently, they will cautiously come near me to eat.

Boy do they ever love to eat, LOL!

I don't know what to do with my naked girl though.

It's too cold for her to go in the coop without any feathers on, but it takes weeks to get new feathers in, right? What should I do??

They really are stinking up the house!

I hear you about the stink. I have one in my bathtub. DH is NOT happy that there is a chicken in the house. She's sick - we found her lying on her side, being walked all over by the other hens. Poor little thing. Not so little, really - she's about four or five months old, but she's not very big. She has a lot of OEG in her, and she's as ugly as sin!

I followed some of the same things you did - I didn't have any canned cat food, but I thought dog food might work. She perked right up and ate about two tablespoons. She drank a bit of sugar water, too. She's sleeping now - with her head under her wing like a normal chicken. Beats laying on her side. I think she would have been dead by morning, if not sooner. She may still be, but at least we can say we tried?
