I'm all done....(remaining) chickens for sale...

Joe, you just need to get into hatching you some eggs, pal. You're guaranteed to have some roosters to protect the women, LOL.
Seriously, I can't count the number of times that my Hawkeye has saved the girls from a hawk attack. I've watched him literally push several of them under a leyland cypress while raising a ruckus himself as a hawk swooped past them. Sometimes he'll duck under with them and other times he'll stand outside their hiding place big as life, making himself a target, but you can tell he's trying to make himself appear larger than his 9 lb. I know that one day I may lose a girl or Hawkeye himself to a hawk since we have many here; he's my first line of defense and I'm very proud of him. I'm glad you've decided not to throw in the towel yet.

Just finished reading the whole post again and looking at the new pics...

Those Reds are beautiful. They will be laying by spring. Don't be disappointed
if they wait until the longer days before beginning to lay.

I gotta get over and see that setup you have some time. That coop is really
a work of art.

P.S. I hope you didn't already tell your daughter she can have the coop as a
playhouse. You may have another item to add to your ToDo list.

Ooooo I like that idea. Hey Joe, wanna borrow a bator for a hatch or two? Your
daughters will love it. I have 3 Little Giants sitting empty in my closet....

Does this mean I can bring a couple of mine, they are free range experts, 8 months old and seasoned vets at avoiding preditors, they could teach the young ones a thing or two??? Let me know I have pics if you want to see.

I thought you were gonna warm one up for next weekend??? I could drop off eggs then go a town over and drop off roos. just waiting for the OK

So sorry to hear about your troubles. Why not get a big roo to protect them. I'm across in NY and I have hawks that nest in my trees, but the roo just keeps all the gals under cover when they're around.

I'll ask around to see if anyone would like them since I'm relatively close by.

A hawk has been eyeing my hens for about a month and they are light at only 3 months old kindoff like yours I covered the pen in blueberry net and used speckled hens CD designe and I also employ to fersome gard Basset Hounds LOL I am also about to get a rooster even though I am not supposed to have one here.

Henry

I have a Salmon Faverolles rooster that doesn't seem to get excited about anything. He and all the ladies are penned up for the winter until I can build a run in the spring. I don't think he's got it in him to be protective. On the other hand, I've seen a RIR roo that confronted and attacked dogs and cats that were just passing by his flock.

Are there better breeds for protective roos than others?
