As far as circulation, I have no idea. It seems like a short time to us (you did a great job) but it depends on how the cells in the chick recon time?!?!?!

I’ve had a similar situation, and found that giving the chicks more room really helps and keeps the chicks from “build ups”

Just thought I'd let ya know wanna-be momma managed to get the older kids out in the yard. They were out there for about 15 minutes when the freak out happened.

Momma peahen decided to come into to the yard cuz she knows where the chicken food is, since I won't feed them dinner 'til my kids are locked back in the yard.

Momma is quite protective, which is good. Even attacking little lady just because she wanted her nest above the chicks. But at that time the kids were so freaked. I convince them it was a good idea to go back inside. They decided it was time to eat and sleep.

I really want about 7 of the 11 old girls and the mister put in the freezer before I let the kids stay out not so supervised. The older girls I want to keep know all about chicks and mom's, my rules. They really don't care about the chicks. But the other ones I don't trust. I want to keep my 4 friends... and wanna-be momma.

They did get their first taste of outside and I got more grey hair.

As soon as I can get older ones thinned. I will be trying to turn them loose all day and see how it goes. As for the littlest ones I think I should wait at least week if not 2 before turning them all out together. To many for me to supervise alone. And fee comfortable about it.

Will be bored silly sitting out there all day. But I do what I gotta do for their safety.. ~ Thank you.

I try to mix their shaving several times a day. And change it after a week or so. Shavings about 2 to 3 inches deep. Maybe more.

Hello, before I do anything, I think I need to mention that I do have another account here. But I'd been gone so long that I had forgotten my log-in information. Thankfully they were able to help me since my email address for that account had changed with an underscore. But I just couldn't wait. I'm one that needs information of most things as quickly as possible to lighten the stress I am under all the time with kids. Be they domestic or feral.

I will get the video clips up as soon as I am done here. And when I give that url, there may be a couple/few that will say something like oh that's her, yuck. I just have that affect on some people. Will edit and add the video url in a few.

Anywho, I don't have a silly phone so the camcorder is where I clipped the images from. I really need another camera. Anywho I will stop babbling. Thank you everyone. Let me know if you want something different. She just wouldn't let me get a good image from underneath.

Does gangrene really set in that fast. It musta been that way longer then I thought. If it is, how do I handle this. Never had to cull a chick.

I wish I had taken the camcorder out with me. I decided to let the big kids out while I shuffled their shavings, replaced their water and filled their food up. And just let them run a while. And decided to do something silly.

It didn't last more then about 10-15 minutes but was an interesting experiment none the less. I wanted to get the little ones food and water tended to but didn't want to have to lock the bigger kids up while I did it. I always bring everything I need with me.

It worked out much better then I thought. For the most part no one really cared. Tho there was one older pullet that thought it would be nice to chase the little ones around and peck at them. Needless to say every time she pecked one of them, I peck her on the back.

She didn't like it much and the mixing only lasted a short time. Things did go well. I will play it by eye and may or may not do that more briefly over the next few days. I know there is going to be a lot of that while everyone gets their pecking order dealt with.

I just don't want to walk out to find a bloody mess. No unsupervised anything for some time. Even when I get the main flock thinned. I really need a handyman ranch hand to hire as needed. Hubby of 34yrs is truly lazy. I need to quit all spoiling.

I have had experience with a toe turning black like that. Chickens don't get gangrene like we would when an extremity is infected and tissue damage passes the point of no return. Chickens wall off the damage by cutting off circulation to it so the bacteria doesn't get circulated through the rest of their body.

Then the black part gradually dries up and falls off. Right before that happens, the tissue swells, and it may be painful, but the swollen part is cauterizing itself. Your bird's toe appears to be earlier in the process and might be saved by twice daily soaks in Epsom salts to restore circulation. It's a long shot, though. Be prepared for the toe to fall off.
