I'm curious, What charities or gifts are you giving to this year?

Samaritan's Purse, the ministry headed by Franklin Graham, Billy Graham's son, has a Christmas catalog filled with 40 different practical things you can select from to donate to folks in need around the world.

One of the items is a brood of chicks, for $25.

We do the Samartian's Purse shoe boxes as a family, the kids sunday school classes and our 4-H club.

Through 4-H we make Christmas cards for Friends of the troops.

Last year through 4-H there was a county wide project where we made stuffed animals and donated them to the EMS, Fire, Police, and hospital for kids that were involved in any situation they would be involved.

New this year we are making parachutes for Voice of the Maryters(sp?). It is for a missionary in Columbia who flys over guerilla camps (the bad guys) and parachutes Bibles, and other materials to help soften and change their hearts. We are doing this through our 4-H club.

We , as a family, donate toys, small furniture stuff, and clothes to a church in our area that does free clothes once a week. The kids are always glad to give their toy to a new home that needs it.

We, as a family, volunteer weekly at CRI, Christian Resource International. This organization takes donations of christian litature, processes it and sends to around the world to english speaking countries. Our job is to package 4# and 11# boxes. People write in requesting items for their home, church, and community. 4# packages are a Bible and Bible study materials. 11# above mentioned and other resources for them (ex.: dictionary, theology, commentaries, history, etc.) My children really enjoy this and so do I.

We make donations to people we know going on missionary trips or other fundraising for church camp and such.

We are going to make donations through Samartian's Purse (I'm going to check out Heifer too) for animals this year for our family gifts. Everyone has too many toys and it's hard to buy for the adults!

this year for my daughter's 10 birthday we had a unique party. Instead of gifts, her friends brought money to purchase food for our local food pantry. So the kids showed up and ate dinner, then we went to Walmart and purchased the food, and delivered it to the food pantry. The kids bought 62 pounds of food.

My girls (3 of them) are working on spool knitting baby hats for our local pregnancy help clinic. I also donated baby stuff to them as we outgrew them.

OK after writing this all down, I didn't realize how much community service projects we do. I am humbled that we have the time and energy to help out in these ways.

Samaritans Purse every year. I let my kids have $50 each to pick whatever they want out of the catalag. Gift 34, 35 and 36 are chicks and farm animals. There is so much more, too. I am very pleased with this Christian charity.

Again, here is the link to the online gift catalog. I hope one of you will consider this charity and give with a loving, selfless heart.

Salvation Army. If it wasn't for them, I probably wouldn't have been born. They took care of my mom and her family when my grandmother was nearly killed in when buttons in the sewing factory she worked in blew-up and burned her. I take them nearly all of my surplus eggs. We also take $100 to the $1 store and buy toys for tots. You can get tons of stuff at the $1 store!!

Also I make quilts from fabric I get from Freecycle for Project Linus.

Why on earth is 4-H involved in Colombian politics? Isn't tht a wee bit outside their mission!? I'm kinda horrified . .

In response to this comment:

The 4-H pledge is:

I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyality, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.

We do community service projects that serve our club members. We help with new siblings through meals for the family, death in family, etc.

We do community service projects that serve our community. We make valentines for seniors living in nursing homes. Our cake decorating kids donate cupcakes they decorated to the local veterans clubs and other projects as needed.

We do community service projects that serve our country. We make Christmas cards for the troops.

We do community service projects that serve our world. We make Samartian Purse shoe boxes as a club. New this year we are sewing parachutes for a missionary in Columbia. Not political at all in my opinion. We are helping spread the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ to people who don't know.

This is all part of 4-H. Sorry you don't agree.

We usually give to our local food bank but, this year we have a family in need and we got them a bunch of groceries and paper products. Also included a few recipes that were quick and easy to make with the groceries we got them. Hopefully, the mother will be back to work before long and their Christmas will be good.
