I would be as honest with the little one as possible and explain that these things can happen, do happen and that it is all part of life. I was always gently straightforward with my children and found that they understand and handle things much better than even we do at times.

I am so sorry you lost your girls. I have fears of losing one of mine when they go outside but I will do the best I can to make sure they are safe and from there...it is no longer up to me.

I am sorry for your loss, and sorry for the horrible sight that greeted you. I agree, if they just took one and ate it, it would be one thing but I know what it's like to go find your birds torn apart and laying there. Sending cyber ((((hugs)))!
