I'm disgusted

The wind can carry the genes to other crops within X# miles.

My crop might be clean of the Monsanto gene but if it gets pollinated by their plants - even by the wind - I would now have their genetically modified seed developing and if they find it out - by hook or by crook - the courts are upholding them and your crop will be destroyed as they own the gene patent and decide what is done with it.

They are also trying to copyright and patent a naturally occuring gene in pigs that make them grow faster. They are trying to do a world wide patent on the gene and process. Even a lowly pg farmer in china could be out of business and not allowed to sell his pigs if they carry a monsanto gene.

Some of the people being sued didn't buy the seed or sign a contract. They just live downwind of the wrong (Monsanto) farm.
And the bullying is just insult to injury.

I am confused by that article or maybe it's too early for me to think that hard, but WHO CARES if a guy makes money being seed cleaner. What is the controversy here besides that Monsanto person being a complete and total waste of space.

Debi read the article slowly after a cup of coffee. LOL

Monsanto holds the patent on a gene that has been found in people's corn who have nothing at all to do with monsanto. The wind did it. The courts are giving Monsanto the power to make that farmer dump his crop and not make one penny on it.

THAT"S the part I don't agree with.
It's not like the OTHER farmers went next door and stole the pollen in great bags and pollinated THEIR crops with it.

That would be like charging a farmer for pollination fees because I have bees 2 miles away. It's not like they can put up a pollen barrior or something.

That is also my opinions about alot of things.

You didn't see people with lots of food allergies before farming became big business inthe last century.

I so agree Miss Prissy.

Between companies like this and our Government paying farmers NOT to grow certain items and importing instead...sad sad sad No wonder people have so many health issues, have shorter life spans and are paying $ 4- $5 for a gallon of milk.

And they're mean. Arrogantly, smugly mean bullies.

I recently read a book (science fiction, Cold Cash War) that makes me wonder when we'll all be owned (not governed) by corporations rather than elected officials. Anyone who controls all the food controls an alarming amount of power. Especially if the seeds won't grow without the special fertilizers and pest repellants that are co-designed with those foods.

And people wonder why I want to can my own food and raise chickens in my back yard

Sadly, every seed catalog I look at, I have to wonder: Is Monsanto getting a cut of the take?
I'm building up a collection of heirloom plants & seeds. Someday I hope to not buy from a seed catalog!
