I'm incubating for the first time!

I candled mine yesterday.. saw a few with veins, but most I saw nothing.. shells are pretty dark, so I figure I just need a brighter light!
That and so long as I don't smell anything and see no leaking, we're good.. Right???

That's what I understand. My eggs are a dark brown so it won't do much good to candle. Mine went in Sunday night and so far so good. All indicators are where they're supposed to be.

I set my first 6 eggs yesterday!!!

Humidity is perfect. I prefer paper cartons, but plastic should be fine. I would cut a hole in the bottom of a plastic carton so there is airflow from the bottom.

You can hatch in a carton, which I prefer. It seems the chicks have an easier time of hatching out, and it makes clean up easier. I hatch in a paper carton with the sides trimmed down and a hole poked in the bottom.

Good Luck!

Thanks Sundown....I'm getting excited thinking about seeing your little buff babies!!!!!!! Oh, by the way, I do have holes cut in bottoms of the plastic egg carton and since the eggs sit at an angle, I think there's good airflow. This carton was so much sturdier than the paper one I started with which got waterlogged and soft.

Candled my eggs at day 9 and only saw a "dark shadow" on the eggs, candled today and saw much the same. Was feeling pretty low about it(this is my first incubation) then I saw the above posts - Thank You all, you have cheered me up, because I have really dark brown eggs here so there is still hope! Although my little Belgian D'uccles egg was empty -

I had a little trouble day 1 getting the temp to stabilize once I added the eggs. The temp went up to 102.9 a couple of times for just a few minutes. Day two I added two more jars of water with the lids on. Now the temp stays between 98.8 - 101.5 and the humidity is 44%. I think not too shabby for a first timer with a homemade incubator!

I'm using a home made incubator also. My DH used to have his class make one each year and hatch eggs. This was one of the science projects they did. Mine seems to be holding all right but I'm only into day four.

Lockdown today on my first ever hatch.

I'm hoping for the best... I've had SO many temp flucs just this week, I can't help but think the worst.
