I found a local chicken seller and they are bred at hatcheries and as I understand it, a lot of EE's are sold as the true Ameraucana and are not. Here are links to pics she sent me

Obviously not all of them are Ameraucanas. We have 13 very healthy chickens now and it's going well, but I am interested in finding a different breed for a 4h project for my kiddo. I don't want to be laughed out of there for getting tricked into buying a different breed.

Hopefully you can help. It's a bit of a drive, but Ill make it if it makes sense to do so.

My issue is the color does not look right for the APA brown red variety that's accepted. The breed site looks a lot more dark and less blondish red than these http://ameraucanabreedersclub.org/gallery.html

None of those are ameraucanas. The ones that the breeder is selling as ameraucanas are easter eggers. Where are you located? Maybe we can help point you to a local breeder of real ameraucanas.
Thank you! Im in DFW.

I hate to sound rude, but I asked what variations she had and she didn't know? I'm no expert, but seriously she just said they look like pheasants. Im new to trying to buy fancier breeds, so I was a bit shocked that she had no idea. I've looked at the breed site so it seemed kinda silly not to know what color variation your chickens are

Yeah, any real breeder of poultry will know what colors of their breed they're breeding. She sounds like she just bulk orders chicks from hatcheries, grows them out some, and then resells them. Which is fine if you're actually advertising what you have.

I agree. She does say they are Ameraucanas on her site, CL, and to me personally on the phone. It just caught me off guard when I asked what colors she had and didnt know.
