Im interested in Ameraucanas and found a local person with pullets, but need help

but I asked what variations she had and she didn't know?
Real Ameraucana will ALWAYS be sold under their variety.

Interesting note... Ameraucana colors are not always the same name as for other breeds... example brown red is the same as black copper in Marans. And Ameraucana Silver is the same as Partridge in Wellsummer aka Brown in Leghorn.

Good luck! :pop

I agree. She does say they are Ameraucanas on her site, CL, and to me personally on the phone. It just caught me off guard when I asked what colors she had and didnt know.

You might want to tell her they're not ameraucanas and request that she changes that in her ad and on her site so that she's not selling easter eggers to people that don't know better. She might not do it, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

There's a big Texas thread here, maybe someone can point you in the direction of actual ameraucanas: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/texas.44/page-4358

Even feed stores do this... it is simply ignorance more than malicious intent for the most part. The hatcheries that sell them sell them AS Ameraucana... average people (non BYC'ers) won't/don't know the difference. Many even state on their web site that they are meant to be a "representation" of the breed and NOT for showing. I wouldn't buy from her.

Oh Im not going to at all. I asked for pics because I thought maybe she genuinely didn't know? The person on the phone may not know vs the person working with them, but I really didn't think they looked like what I was looking for. Im fine with different colors, but I couldn't make the leap in my head to the brown red variety with those photos

She probably won't bc I asked if they were true to the breed and she kind of snipped that she had a receipt from the hatchery. I asked for photos and it didn't look right to me, but I have zero experience with the breed except for internet photos

Ideal Poultry in TX sells EE as Ameraucana and has for quite some time. This has lead to a pretty pervasive misunderstanding in most feed stores and backyard keepers in TX about the differences.

I’d search out a breeder that actually shows. There’s quite a few breeders in TX, some may be a short drive but worth it.

Also, these people have some nice birds But don’t breed what you’re looking for but DO raise what you want from hatchery stock. Anyway, they may be able to point you to someone in DFW that breeds true Ameraucana OR they order and grow out from hatcheries they can include some for you on a future order so you can get your hands on some without dealing with minimums.

This is why I like working with Cackle, they are one of the few hatcheries that differentiate between their EEs and Ameraucanas.

I think MY Pet Chicken also sells Blue Ameraucana... and the difference is approximately $18 instead of $4.

I have seen a LOT of feed stores/hatchery that in fact spell it correctly even though they are selling Easter Eggers.
