I'm still (very slowly) making progress. The setup wizard is almost all done now, all that's left is some data validation on the last page, and a bunch of sql to write for the database. If I dare make another goal, I'd hope that the setup wizard is done in ~3 days.

Two weeks later, and I'm halfway there...

One morning I was met by an "overlapping partitions" error when booting up my computer. But now (with a new respect for live CDs) I'm back at it. Finished up the last page in the setup wizard yesterday, now finishing up the sql for inserting everything into the database. Soon, I'll be able to start on the "real" stuff.

After almost one year and one month since the beginning of the project, I'm extremely pleased to announce the release of Flock Manager 0.1!

This will be the first release of the web-based version. It is also the first in a series of (hopefully) 10 releases until we get to version 1. Until version 1 is reached, all releases will have lots of rough edges and will not be hosted on BYC. The 0.x series is mostly for testing, please DON'T put any information in it that you can't lose. THERE IS A HIGH POSSIBILITY THAT IT WILL EAT YOUR DATA.

In this release all that will work is managing your contacts.

So it doesn't really have any practical use yet. I just wanted to get it out the door so people could start really trying to break it. Please don't hesitate to do anything possible to try to break it. And remember, THERE IS A HIGH POSSIBILITY THAT IT WILL EAT YOUR DATA.

I've been going through the thread and made a simple list of all the needs ya'll have helped me come up with that Flock Manager will hopefully meet. A huge thank you to everyone who has submitted a request or told me exactly what they want!

1. I want to be able to track the age and birth dates of my poultry
2. I want to be able to track feed consumption
3. I’d like to be able to see how much each egg is really costing me
4. I need to keep track of which birds were mated with which (sort of like a genealogy)
5. I want to be able to see bird characteristics
6. I would like to see how much profit I’m making
7. I want an easy way to visualise staggered hatches
8. I would like a family tree of my birds
9. I’d like to be able to see my income and expenses separately
10. I want to be able to easily print out reports
11. I want to be able to filter the list of my birds by the type they are (chicken, peafowl, etc.)
12. I really want a calendar feature that would track my birds’ ages in weeks
13. I don’t like to manually input information like the bird’s age
14. I don’t want to have to give each bird a name. Leg bands work best
15. I want to be able to keep records of orders from my customers
16. I want # of eggs laid/day/week/month and temperature on those days then average temp per week/month
17. I want to be able to easily see how many birds I have that are of laying age
18. I’d like to be able to see my birds productivity rate
19. I want to see my expenses for the week/month/year
20. I need to be able to easily handle flock expansions
21. I’d like to keep track of the weight, color, time collected, and fda grade of my eggs
22. I need to be able to trace the weight of my birds at different ages
23. I’d like to be able to see stats on how long my birds are sick, and when they get sick
24. I hate just taking notes!!!
25. I want to track the height of my birds
26. I would like to be able to see a list of people I have sold things to
27. I would like to be able to see a list of people I have bought things from
28. I need to know a chickens background/lineage
29. Accurate feeding, hatching, egglaying info is important
30. I’d want a place to include a picture of each bird
31. It would be nice to see the date each hen laid their first egg
32. I need to track the purchase dates for food, supplies, etc.
33. A way to record cull date for a bird would be nice
34. I would like to be able to see the number of birds of each breed and their ages at a glance
35. I’d like a place to record the cause and date of death
36. I need a place to write a detailed description of each bird
37. Easy organising of health notes would be nice…
38. A spot to record defects that a bird might have
39. Using spreadsheets isn’t pleasant
40. I want to be able to see how much my hens laying goes down in the winter
41. A chart showing which hens lay the most (and least)
42. It get old real fast having to remember week by week
43. I need to track how many eggs I sell or donate
44. I hate re-entering all my info if there is an update or bugfix to the program
45. I would like to be able to print out a complete report for a bird showing has pedigree, pic, NPIP number, Name, ID, breeder name etc
46. What would be really useful to me would be a way of documenting each egg in each row of each of my egg turners?
47. I don’t EVER want to enter the same data twice.


So as I said, Flock Manager should someday be able to meet all these needs. *whew* Without becoming bloated, slow, or cluttered so help me God.
