Merry Christmas everyone! Woke up to snow falling this morning. Probably about 3 inches.

I didn't realize that wood chips also could generate heat and combust. Good to know!

If your babies don't need heat why do you need a brooder in the coop? Is it more for getting them acclimated to the coop and letting the others get used to them or will you have to reheat your chickens when they go outside?

.

I'm not positive that they will, but figured better safe than sorry. I ended up putting quite a bit in their yard too.

The in-coop brooder is more to protect the youngin's for a while until everyone gets used to each other. I still haven't had time to work on it.

Thought I'd share my big poser with you guys! After work I go out to the coop and give them a snack and drink a glass of wine with them. I'm usually still in the coop when my husband gets home...Zaffer announces his arrival everyday...I caught him tonight! Then there is what I refer to as my sharks...they circle me while I'm sitting with them. They are contemplating flying up into my lap. Oh and please take note of my festive Red PJ bottoms and wore out sneakers...my top is a red shirt wit snowmen on it...I went all out to bring the holiday spirit to work today (I work from home)!

Zaffer is very handsome!

I got to actually see an egg happen today....pretty darn freaky.;)
Ha, an "egg happen"!!!

It's pretty amazing. Rosemary the Head Hen is fond of laying her eggs deep inside a rosemary shrub. One day before they all decided it'd be fun to molt at the same time and stop laying eggs, I wandered over there quietly, and just like Jane Goodall when she was five years old, I patiently waited.

And then the egg happened!! She stood up a ways, not fully upright, and the egg emerged, and then she sat down again. It was surprisingly uneventful!!

We got some snow too, no measurement to put on it... way less than the weather guys told us to expect, but lake effect is *supposed* to be coming soon. The next 2 weeks we're supposed to be below freezing, mostly in the single digits w/ below zero windchills.. IDK why I live here.

One of my ladies popped out an egg while I was in the coop too! That thud sound gets me every time. How they're not all scrambled eggs is beyond me! I didn't realize that they stand when the egg comes out until I saw it with my own eyes.

Last night i used my heaters for the first time, and i have not been out yet. But i am sure they will work fine.

I was looking right into the eye of the storm, my coop is raised so i was waiting for her to roost so i could close up....i saw much too much.:)
