Building another rabbit cage today and putting hinges on a nest box. Need to add siding to it as well... maybe later, it is cold out!

Free chickens! Are you going to hatch eggs?
Yay for eggs! What kind of bird laid it... Bantam?
We don't really go around picking up our birds. I have one Jaden who is suddenly very light. She's a Delaware so she's always been ridiculously heavy. I also noticed she was always puffed up and hunched over like she was cold. Understandable because it is freaking freezing here but then I noticed she had poop clumped up around her butt. Tomorrow I'm going to give her a soaking to clean her up a bit but then I realized that she eats from the top of the feeder not the bottom because it was too close to the ground. I raised it up so hopefully she'll be able to eat out of it like a normal chicken and gain some of her weight back. I don't really know if that's the problem or not but she seems like she's less puffed up and moving around more. I wish they had some way to say hey this is what's wrong so you could fix it. I only have 14 Birds but unless I'm standing there for a while I don't notice things going on. Like unless Odin happens to walk over to the edge of his cage area I don't see that the stupid girls are sticking their head in there trying to eat his wattles.

LOL! Yes, a free chicken!!! We are planning on hatching some Marans this spring.
love the name too. She will lay some lovely eggs.OMG! I am getting eggs! View attachment 1235538
I never expected any but, i found one in the coop on the floor about a week ago, frozen and cracked. Since then she has discovered the nest box. Every day or 2 i get another egg. Of course i have to get rid of the eggs for a while because i have been medicating them.
And i lost another pullet! I thought they were dying from Mereks but she was loaded with mites. Ugh. So stupid of me, should have checked her sooner!
I have a tray table that i keep a little food and water on, with a puppy pad, she stays on it quite a bit. oddly, when she sits on my lap, she rarely poops. I keep her on an old towel just in case.
She did poop on my arm yesterday. Man was it warm!
I'm with ya! This cold is ridiculous this year. And the older i get, the worse i hate the cold.
Even though the hot flashes are keeping me a bit warmer this year.
Yeah for eggs! Sorry for the losses. Those dang mites can be impossible to notice, so don't feel bad.
I was over at my sister-in-law's house before Christmas and we were talking about her Marans hens. We walked outside so she could show me her best girl and then I see a Blue Copper Marans hen...I was like..."Where and when did you get that Blue Marans hen??"...she was like "What?". So, I pointed her out and she was like oh...I didn't know that is what is she is! She told me she got her about a month ago for taking care of a friends chickens for them. Then she says, you can have her if you want her! So, I now have a blue girl to go with my blue boy and I think she is beautiful! Zaffer agrees with me. I've kept with my naming trend of using words that mean "blue", so her name is Lazuli (pronounced LAZOOLEE...as in Lapis Lazuli). She isn't laying yet, but hopefully soon! Oh...I also named my Faverolles cockerel, well, my husband did, his name is "Lafayette".

That makes sense. When my girls started lay I found a pile of tiny brown eggs hidden behind the food can. I instantly assume that came from my sebright Bantam bc they were so small & she is the oldest. Not until I looked it up Did I realize that she would lay white eggs. I was surprised with how small their first eggs were but now I got some really big ones that don't even fit in the egg cartons. I haven't gotten any double yolks in months.
This morning I finally caught Jackie in a nest. Unfortunately she was taking forever to lay so I didn't get to see which egg was hers. But it's nice to know that she is actually laying.
I do not know if it was mites or something else. I need to find a place to get testing done. Not much around here.Congrats on the eggs! I'm still getting between 4 and 6 a day. I've been feeding a lot of them to the chicks -- could be why they are so big.
Sorry about losing your pullet -- was it due to the mites you think?
I've noticed that they don't poop on ya too much when you're holding them, but I did get my pants leg pooped on today. I can't imaging letting these "chicks" run around on the carpet now -- they poop way too big and too often. When they were tiny it was easier to clean up.
I think I have finally quit having hot flashes and boy am I glad! I had a hysterectomy at 34, so those hot flashes lasted 23 years and they were just awful. Some women are lucky and don't get them too bad or at all.
Your new girl is beautiful. That was really nice of your sister!
I think my eggs are probably comparable to the grocery store large. I've only had one that was a double yolker and huge, but I accidentally gave it away.
This made me thing of the cats w/ cucumbers videos. Supposedly they jump sky high b/c they think the cucumber is a snake.Yes, Honey seems to have it down pat! She's never going to want to stay in the hen house.
I can't believe I'm saying this as I really do enjoy the cold weather over summer, but I can't wait till it warms up! Seems I'll never get these chicks outside. The boys seem to be maturing so much faster than my original chickens and they are getting out of hand. I have the boys and girls separated except when they come out to eat and play. The girls have taken to standing in the corner or run screaming when the boys come harass them. I have a hunch some might get to freezer camp before they make it to the chicken house.
I can't remember who was talking about the "monsters" in the chicken pen. I gave my chicks some monsters today -- carrot peels. You'd think I threw of bunch of snakes on the floor. They really are chicken. Hilarious!
That's a great idea. I noticed one of my puffies has a dirty butt too.. it might just be easier to give them a little trim than trying to wash everyone's butts. I think it's so cold that when it's wet it freezes to their tail feather and doesn't wipe off like it normally does. Plus they don't have as much opportunity to dust bath as the had before. We're supposed to be above freezing later this week and all of next week so I'm hoping they'll get some outside time and things will dry up a little bit.I trimmed the butt feathers on a chocolate Orpington yesterday. I didn't want to bring her in for a bath in these cold temps. I find its easier to just cut the junk off with some good sharp scissors.
Very pretty!love the name too. She will lay some lovely eggs.
Cute! I saw something about that, but I never see the signs at my feed store.View attachment 1236286
One of the free Purina signs i got for buying feed.
