I didn't know what you meant by an 'excelsior nest pad ' but just looked it up! Thank you for the advise. I will definitely be trying that in the future!

Excelsior is shredded aspen wood. It comes in bales and several thicknesses of mats. For nest pads, they glue it to some sturdy paper. Some hens try to scratch it up but most seem to be happy with just the way it is.
