I'm not feeding my Chickens anymore!

I'm down to feeding about 3/4 to 1 gallon of feed just to supplement for 36 layers and 3 roos. Mine have been foraging for over a month. Once it got above 45 I cut out the scratch. Ours get treats, daily, too. They love avacados! They'll eat anything except uncook celery or carrots. I don't give them anything moldy, though.

I'd be careful about feeding them any veggie or canola oil. It's hydrogenated = near plastic and it's almost all GMO. But, I'd give 'em the animal fats.

Avocados are considered poisonous to parrots. Is it not the same for chickens?

I thought avacados were a no no for chickens??

Avocados are considered poison to birds in general. BUT, I've since read that it's the papery shell around the seed that contains the poison so as long as they don't get that part, they should be fine. Since her birds have been eating them, I'd say that's proof. If the fruit themselves were poison, I'd think there'd have been symptoms by now.

I still will not allow my cockatiels to have any part of an avocado. Anyway I love them so there's never any left to give birds anyway

Yes, that is correct! Avocado seems to be a big misconception in the animal world. I was always told that avocado was poisonous to dogs until I did my own research when I opened my dog bakery and started studying canine nutrition- it's actually the pit, tree bark and leaves that can be toxic because they contain the toxic principal 'persin'. There is even the dog food AVODERM made from avocado. I assume the same would be for the chickens, that they can eat the fruit just not the pit or seed, bark or leaves from the tree. The fruit and oils have many health benefits actually.

I stand corrected!! I just went onto the AVODERM website and right on their site is says "Now birds are a different creature and it IS known that avocados are toxic to birds."
I guess chickens are not the same as dogs and according to this 'birds' shouldn't have any part of the avocado?? Hmmmmmm

I've heard about the skin and pit being toxic too. Maybe the flesh contains too much fat for a bird's liver to handle. Just my 2 cents.

Their are LOTS of people out there that feed it to their birds!!

Oleanders are seriously poisonous plants but it sure doesn't affect my chickens when they decide to nibble on the leaves!!

I have 6 hens. during the winter they would go through 40 pounds of feed every 3-4 weeks. In April when the greening started and bugs got going, we let them free range. they have a wooded area and our front lawn.

From that day on, they do not want to eat commercial food. I always keep a little scoop in their coop, but they ignore it. I also supplement with kitchen veggie scraps. Ive also noticed that they get most of their water while free ranging. I used to fill a 2 gallon waterer every day. Now, I only change their water to keep it clean.

I should be good to go, it's always summer here and I am in a constant battle with bugs of all kinds

I'm growing mangels for the first time too- not just for chickens, but for our lambs and horse also. I'm really hoping to get some of the 20 pounders the seed catalogue mentioned.

My girls range all day and they have never been fond of scratch. I do buy cheap millet bird seed and hide it and allow it to sprout- the chickens love it and last year some of the sprouts they didn't find grew tall and went to seed, so I'm hoping to have some volunteer patches this year. All our kitchen scraps go to the compost pile and the chickens can be seen digging out choice finds- I scared myself last year reading about botulism, but we use the compost in our gardens and I'm pretty critical about what goes in, and the piles get turned a lot.

I just read that only the skins and pits of avocados were poisonous.

Same here - avocados are on the "toxic" list for all types of birds/fowl.
