Help me

It’s day 19. I hear peeping. Somebody pipped already. It’s my first hatch (technically second but the first was one egg I was trying to save after broody got murdered).

ANYWAY. I am constantly checking the incubator and I see a yellow liquid seeping out from under an egg. I have them laying on damp paper towels to minimize mess and help with humidity. I start googling and find a thread telling me to flip it. I flipped and THIS IS WHAT I SEE!

I don’t know if she’s breathing, ok, not ok, can they survive if they pip into the bottom?? I know I shouldn’t have opened it! I did it really fast and my humidity didn’t move.

Stepfordhomestead,

As long as the chick is peeping and continuing to break out of the shell, all is going well. Allow the new chick to break its way out. The small hole should be allowing the chick to breathe. The yellow is the yolk that the chick is in the process of consuming, as the yolk provides the first 24hrs. of nutrients. Sounds to me like all is going well. I look forward to hearing about the progress.

Update this morning-

We have 5 of 7 eggs pipped! There is a second egg pipped on the bottom but I can see it, it’s right on the edge and there’s no yolk leaking out. It’s angrily peeping, so I assume it’s fine. The first bottom pipper that I flipped isn’t making much noise but I can see it moving inside it’s little hole. It’s pretty quiet besides angry pipper so I guess everyone is resting.

I’m actually really hoping they all sit tight til I get home tonight so my kids can see them hatch.

We have two peeps!!

The original bottom pipper is breathing in her shell but not coming out. It’s been over 12 hours, how long should I wait before I do something? And what should I do? I leave soon for the whole day.

I did that and it’s not moving so much anymore.

Will it be ok?
Well was it peeping? You can tap on the egg or just remove a bit in the natural way of a zip as they do when hatching. It could be exhausted trying to hatch upside down.

Last week I was in same situation. I helped it by gently peeling away the shell with tweezers and softening the membrane with coconut oil after watching a you tube video about why we should give tired incubator chicks a chance if our hearts tell us too. Mine did. He is a gorgeous little healthy boy. The membrane somehow had got too hard. I’m glad I did but also can’t say he wouldn’t have eventually done it himself. I did it for me!!! I was here this time last week where you are. It’s scary and exciting.

On thing everyone should know is that when locking down the incubator for hatching is to ensure all aircells are facing upwards to the top of the incubator. It makes hatching way easier. And if you see a pip to the bottom you turn it upwards so they can have an easier time hatching out. :frow
Best wishes with the chick..:fl
