We love cloth diapers at our house!!
The Gerber prefolds (today, don't know about the past...) are too thin to work well. You can buy packages of good prefolds online for pretty cheap. I like indian prefolds the best, but we also had some chinese ones that worked well. The Chinese one are not quite as soft, though really still perfectly fine.
Make sure you get 2 or 3 snappis to use instead of pins!!!!
For newborn covers, be sure to buy covers with gussets in the legs. The gussets keep any exploding poop from leaking out. We almost never had blow outs with gussets. Prowraps brand of covers are kind of ugly, but extremely functional for newborns and they are hardy so you can use them for your next baby, if you have more, or resell them.
We also loved fitted diapers. Kissaluvs and Motherease were my favorites. The Kissaluvs are perfect for newborns, especially in the middle of the night.
I would get 2 or 3 dozen diapers and at least 8 covers. You can let damp covers dry and reuse them at the next diaper change, but if the baby poops a lot you'll have to throw those covers in the wash.
Make sure you get two wetbags--they are water proof bags to put the diapers in, then you throw the diapers and the bag in the wash. You'll need two because one will be in the wash and one will be full of diapers! There are also small wetbags with zippers that you can stick in the diaper bag for when you're out. Avoid the wetbags that have fabric on the outside and PUL (waterproof fabric) on the inside. I've found that those kind let the moisture wick to the pretty fabric outside, and stuff gets wet. Ick. It's not a problem if you just buy the kind that are one layer of plain PUL fabric.
This is where I got one of my wetbags. (I made the other...)

One other thing that really helped us was fleece liners. Just buy fleece from the fabric store, use pinking sheers to cut it into wide strips, and lay that in the crotch of the prefolds or fitted diapers. The fleece stays dry and the moisture goes right through it into the diaper, so the baby's bottom stays dry and rash-free! They are also great for later when the baby has more solid poops...you can just shake it off in the toilet because for some reason poop doesn't stick to the fleece like it does to the cloth of the diapers. If you breastfeed, the infant poop can just all go into the wash like it is, it dissolves away easily.
