but thats the prob when it gets like 1 month old I have to give it to a friend:(

Is the friend going to take all the chicks - this one and any others you buy? If so then get another chick, but there is a chance that your broody will not take the chick, so you would have to raise it.

I have a broody like that, she refuses chicks who do not hatch under her - she must be able to tell by chick voice.

Now I have a couple other broodies who will take chicks for up to a week past the date that their own chicks have hatched and will feed or warm any chick who walks up to them.

Wow, this thread is pretty strange.

Many people have dropped eggs while candling, sad. Live and learn. Don't kick yourself too hard.

So sorry about the egg.

I have a single chick (no friends). She requires a lot of human attention, but she'd eating and growing, very lovable, and doing just great. Although, I don't think she knows she's a chicken...

I'm sure I would have done the same thing- you panic thinking - eggsplosion. What really freaks me is the cannibal chickens - how gross. I know some broody hens go loco and eat chicks as they hatch. That's the part that would haunt me forever. I've heard of dog mothers doing that to new pups instead of just severing the umbilical cord - they eat the whole pup. Gasp, I am glad I don't raise dogs anymore.

Dont feel to bad.

I had a hen setting on a clutch when a dog broke in and killed all the chickens in my coop.

I didnt go into the coop for about a day and was going to throw away all the eggs because I didnt know when she started to set on them.

I took one egg out and broke it open to see how far along they were and found an almost fully developed chick and saw it die before me.

I took the other 10 eggs and put them under a heat lamp and hoped for the best.

Fortunately about 3-4 days later, I had 7 more hatch out of that clutch.

I was ECSTATIC!!!

Still feel bad for the one I killed though.
