I'm serious... I want to make winter hats for my chickens

The mental image is hilarious!

Sidenote, I know I read somewhere (I'll see if I can find it) about a chicken behavioral study to see exactly how chickens recognized their own flockmates. They tried dying them different colors, putting different clothes on them, etc. They all continued to recognize each other, except when they covered their combs. So I wonder how that would actually work in practice?

I found a pattern for a dog hat I want to knit for my dogs. It goes over their head and under the chin with an opening for their face. No ear holes. And I was thinking to myself (kind of jokingly) that if scaled down it would make a good chicken hat.

though I think your intentions are good I think your chickens would end up pecking at them and you would find them soiled and on the ground full of holes. but can you imagine though if the chicken kept it on...I would have to request pictures....I can just imagne a chicken with a little knitted dolly hat and sweater...hehehehe

Yep, and good luck keeping them on. Vaseline's a hassle, but that and a well ventilated dry coop are your best bets IMO.
