I picked up my 6 BO chicks this afternoon, all in their brooder now. Making sure they are finding the water okay, and are warm. I have an infernal stupid question.......when they sleep at this age do they actually lie down? They're freaking me out! They look so peaceful I pick them up to make sure they're ALIVE! (I think I did that with my sons as well as babies, never mind, I KNOW I did).

I'm such a newbie here, but many thanks to this forum that I have been reading and studying for months prior to making this move.

Yes thats normal they don't lie down as such more like splat themselves on the floor face down, on their backs or any other position that makes you panic when you go by the brooder, lol

I'm new at the raising chickens thing too! Just hatched my first 3 chicks in an incubator. I did the exact same thing as you, with picking them up, and I also caught myself staring at them to make sure they were breathing....lol...it's that parental instict. Enjoy your new peeps!!

Yeah they look all floppy and their feet stick out behind them and when you go BOO they don't move. Freaks me out every time, even though I have had dozens of hatches. I still need to poke them to make sure.

I had one who would fall asleep standing up, propping itself up by its nose on the brooder wall. Every time! But most of them just splay out and get comfy.
