They are the same general shape as the seed of a weed that grows in southwestern states, called the goathead. You didn't want to get into a patch of those, barefoot.

Oh YES. Got a nasty introduction to them when I moved to eastern Oklahoma back in the late 90's. Those little hellish demons even grew under the black walnut. A thorough raking then sweeping with a deck broom of the area and a burn barrel. To make sure no seed heads escaped, I sourced some MDMA and sprayed it double strength. Mamma don't play with devils out to hurt my babies.

Oh YES - to both questions. My Mom saved - and redeemed - them almost religiously. We had loads of fun sticking them in the little booklets and poring over the catalogues. I still have a partially filled booklet stashed away with my childhood treasures!

Mom had us stick S&H green stamps as well as Gold Bond stamps into their little booklets when we were kids. I don't know if she ever redeemed them but ... she was pretty thriifty so she probably did. I just don't what she ever got with them.

We still have a kitchen folding stool from the 50's that came from redeeming S&H green stamps. My late MIL got quite a few things with those stamps and so did my mom.

I'd completely forgotten about the gold stamps! I don't think they were as wildly available in upstate NY or maybe we just shopped at the A & P market more than wherever gave out the gold ones.
Also, I'm remembering having to collect something or other to get a Dino the dinosaur from the Sinclair gas station.

My job was to lick and stick but they were my mother’s to redeem. The only thing I remember her getting were a set of wood handled serrated knives.
They are still going strong in my kitchen today!

Oh yeah, Thank You for the memory. I do remember cigarettes having coupons.
