I'm so old I Remember when:

Oh, yes, we did this too. We rode our bikes everywhere too. We could go to the town pool and swim all we wanted. When we left home we were told what time to be back most of the time just before dark.

The pond was in the back of a field. From home, we had to walk through the woods to get there. My father was in the Rescue Squad so he knew everyone in the area. He knew some of the rough kids went back there. My friends and I did not know but we found out.
I remember the pride when I graduated from, "Be home before the street lights come on," to "Come home WHEN the street lights come on!"

I was actually rarely spanked as a child and never at school. My brother on the other hand was rather hard headed.
My parents more often chose to ground us. Grounding last a lot longer than a spanking.
Grounding was WAY worse, because all your friends knew the details ... especially if you had siblings!

When one of us would get in trouble at church,
How can you get in trouble at church?
There was nothing to do in my church besides waiting and listening with my family.
Even the times we went there with the children of our Catholic school for a special service or with the school choir to sing for the Catholic community (obliged for our 6th class = approx 11yo ) were not in a setting were we could do anything very naughty.

🤔💭 Now I remember I did manage to get punished once for making my class mates laugh. I had to write a 100 times : “I should not act like a clown in church.”
And I was reprimanded by the teacher once for not showing up to sing in the choir. Completely forgot we should sing at church that Sunday.

Supposedly I was a brat. Including tantrums for no good reason. We also weren't supposed to talk in church, and 5-year-old me probably did that, or shoved a sibling, or something.
