I was an apprentice electrican in '78 when gasoline doubled to $1 a gallon. We were working on the river, 7-12's and carpooling 1.5 hours each way.
We were SURE we would be riding motor bikes soon.

I remember when we went off the Gold Standard. I think Charles De Gaule was their head of state at that time and demanded that France get gold in payment for all the paper dollars in France. I think the going price for gold then was $35 a Troy ounce. That I'm not positive but is what I can remember now.

You are correct. The dumbest thing Nixon did was take us off the Gold standard and recognize the wrong China. IMHO
