Area codes were much bigger in area then, and for a local call you just had to dial 4 numbers. Not sure what determined the cutoff for LD, but there was a flat rate for 3 minutes, and when you were close, there were beeps on the line that gave you 10 seconds or so to say goodbye.It's why minute timers often sat next to the telephone. I can't remember if LD was just to a different area code, or even to the next town over.
Yeah. Can't help but think making a decent living is harder for young people today. Multiply it by 10 for inflation - $48,000/year is about $23.00/hour, way above minimum wage. Then imagine there's any place to rent for $650.00, including utilities.$4,800/year base pay - worked every bit of overtime possible - the Princess was a 'stay at home' mom - rent was $65/monthly - heat and electricity included.
