I'm so old I Remember when:

I was just at the DG and there was a sign that certain cards like apple pay had to be bought with cash. Must have had too much fraud. In this area cash is still a viable source. People even still write checks.

I still have my old driver's license number from 30 years ago memorized because I had to write it on all of my checks.

Pen pals (this might have been mention as I didn't read through all 757 pages - yet) - - -

When you corresponded to someone via handwritten letters in another state or country. I think we take for granted that we can talk to anyone from anywhere these days.

French class in high school the teacher arranged for us to have pen pals in actual France. Mine was much better at keeping up her end of the correspondence than I was.
Je suis désolée, mon amie.

There's a number of stores around here, including my veterinarian, the garden center I frequent, and the homebrew shop I visited a couple weeks ago for instance that all add a charge if you use even a debit card or they (the vet) give a discount for cash sales. Apparently VISA and Master Card are charging for using their services even if it's just your own money in your own bank account you're paying with.

Yes, when I paid a parking ticket they said it would cost more to pay with credit card. But I wasn't carrying $200 around with me...

You just reminded me. When renewing the vehicle registration, there's a $2.50 fee if you use a card - whether in person or on line, and an additional $1.50 for them to mail you the little sticker and the paper registration renewal. My bank has an ATM less than 5 blocks from the Tag Office you bet I bring cash and wait in line. It's never been more than 8 minutes and there's always someone to commiserate with in line.

We kept pen pals in French class as well. I always wondered what happened to mine. I remember her name was Monique. I wasn't a good pen pal either. 😬

A person I know knew of someone who offered to pay for a medical treatment in cash. $75, so this was about 20 years ago. The person at the facility refused, saying she had to send a bill.

The end of the story: The woman refused to pay the bill saying she had offered payment, and payment had been refused, and therefore, she didn't owe.

She won.
I went through the same thing just a few years ago. Had pink eye and wanted to pay the urgent care bill right then and there. They refused to take my cash, said they had to send a bill. I told them if they refused my cash, I wouldn't pay. I never did and they "forgave" my bill

The number has changed? I've had the same driver's license number since I started driving, 24 years ago. Got my license at 18, not 16
