Back in the mid '50s here our home phone number (as well as just about everyone else in Texas) only had 3 numbers. It wasn't a party-line, but it rang to parties also & you received the call whether it was or not.
Around '58 the phone Co changed our area code & added 2 numbers to the front & 2 number to the end.
My parents made me & my sister memorize those 3 numbers (362) said you get lost, just tell someone those numbers, they'll help you get home. Our original area code was 512 here, they gave that to San Antonio & we got stuck with 361
The front 2 numbers added were a 5 & a 7. To the end they added a a 7 & a 0
