I'm so old I Remember when:

Ours were more rudimentary and had to be gunned up by twisting the elastic band that was fixed to the propeller many times until really tight.
When throwing the little plane up into the air and at the same time letting go of the hold on the elastic, it would spin the propeller and the plane would fly for a few moments.
 
I remember when they had planes on a string with little fuel powered motors.
You'd fire them up then hold the end of the string and let them fly around you in a circle.
Pity the fool sibling that walked into their line of flight.

Can't forget the 5 cent punch out Balsa in cellophane, throw them hard and loop around and smack ya right in the face.
