I'm so old I Remember when:

I remember long lines to get gas, and only being able to buy it on odd or even days, depending on license plate. We were 121WLM, so we could only buy gas on odd numbered days.

And I even remember the license plate!!!
There was an energy shortage as some ships? tankers were not allowed in. So the odd/even days. I was in NJ at the time and could go to 5 points and see the tankers sitting in the ocean.

They still do that... if you are in prison :lau
I do not remember using an operator as I knew no body far away. But I do remember party lines. We had to use one until a private line became available. And paying for long distance calls. Makes me feel old at 77. Young kids today do not know how to tell time on a clock, never will know about long distance and some can not even read cursive. So much information lost to them. Ah, well.

They also don't know how to write a check or understand what it's for. A couple of years ago I used one at a grocery store and the young girl at the register had no idea what I handed her. She took it and looked at it and said "what is this?" When I explained it, she said she had "never seen one before or heard of a check". oh boy. She had to call the manager over for assistance who said about 10% of their customers still write checks. I didn't so much feel old or antiquated as I felt sorry for her and all the others her age who really are 'clueless' to no fault of their own due to all the technological advances.
