I'm so old I Remember when:

When Mother bought scads of fabric and made a skirt for herself, a matching shirt for my brother, dresses for my sisters and a jumper for me (not a sweater, my British friends, but a skirt with an attached apron-like top, under which I wore a black turtleneck), snd we wore these matching orange and yellow plaid outfits to church, feeling like the height of elegant fashion!
I remember making a dress in home economics class in junior high school. It turned out ok and I had t wear it in a style show the class was doing. I never wore it again because I felt homemade that I made wasn't very good. My mom bought me a leather coat, light blue with red lining when I was about 6 or 7 years old. She said it was expensive. Well, I had to wear it but I HATED it. It was so stiff that I could barely put my arms down like in the movie The Christmas Story.

In 8th grade Jr High choir, no boys signed up. All year, it was all girls. So for our spring concert, the teacher had us all sew (or our moms sew) matching dresses. The hem could be no shorter than 2" above the knee. Welllll.... some of the girls decided to skip that suggestion. Wow, some of them really showed a LOT of leg.

Since the material was cut that short and there was no way to get more of the material nor time to sew another dress, the teacher just had to bite her tongue.
