Necessity. I hate the desert and never imagined living in one. I tried to embrace it, initially. The climate responded by attacking my health. I don't find it beautiful. I find it harsh and ugly and rather post-apocalyptic.Are you in the desert by choice or necessity? Why not embrace the climate you live in and find the unique beauty of it rather than frustrate yourself by trying to grow things not compatible with it?
I've seen some inventive and quite lovely xeriscaped and/or low maintenance displays using a combination of succulents and water wise plants along with imaginative hard scaping. Unless you're in an HOA have you thought about a mural, metal panels, or statuary?
As we gardeners say, grow where you're planted. Here's some ideas I found to get you started and a site you might find helpful.

Properties with xeriscaped yards like the photos from that landscaping web site are rare. Those are homeowners with a lot of money. The reality is that most "yards" here are just dirt and rock and maybe some desert scrub.
Where I used to live, yards look like this. Bonus: there's an ocean at the end of the street!
I'm aware I vent here a bit too much. I'll rein it in.
