I'm so old I Remember when:

Going to the local feed mill for layer mash with Grandmom where they milled everything from chicken feed to sweet feed for horses and everything in between. Now the building has been turned into Bistros, boutiques and probably some artsy shops. JUST WONDERFUL :old:mad: And another thing. Years ago they tore out the cobblestone sidewalks because it was a constant trip hazard. Now they tore up the smooth cement sidewalks to reinstall cobblestone. I have met the enemy, and it is US!:he

Wasn't that an amazing smell, especially when a load of fresh hay was delivered? Our local mill had a fellow who did leather repairs in it, so we had the added bonus of newly cleaned old leather added on. Just thinking about it now gives me a heady sense of warmth and nostalgia. Wonderful!

Especially when they were milling the sweet feed! The NO SMOKING signs were everywhere. Grain dust in the cobwebs and rough sawn lumber. Ol' Zeke would walk you around and show you the milling process without the fear of having your lawyer on speed dial.

Just remembered what I had forgot. How many remember the first thing the waitress did when you sat down for a meal at a restaurant way back then? I remember getting a glass of iced water followed by what will you be drinking to day? Mine was always "Iced Tea". Now I just get Iced Tea.

I remover when water was free and now a lot of places charge for water

Yep water first, take your drink order while you decided on food. Now you have to ask for water, just give me the unsweetened Iced Tea. Does save the server an extra trip I guess.
Not really. Server still has to come to your table to give you menus and ask for your drink order. May as well bring you water along with menus, right? So ... if they are delayed bringing you drinks, at least you have water. It happens.

The hostess sets the menus down when they seat you. When I was a waitress, it was always annoying when someone would order water for the whole table. Because then people are less inclined to order an actual drink and the bill would be lower, which ties into how much is tipped

By golly you're right, it is the hostess that gives you the menus.

We don't drink, though - not alcohol, anyway. I often ask for decaf and an ice water and DH drinks iced tea, lemonade or Dr Pepper.
