I'm so old I Remember when:

Larger stores had incinerators and many cardboard boxes were burned.
I remember a lot of boxes back in the eighties had cut outs for easy handing and the stores would save them for you if asked them to and there were good for moving

Especially when they were milling the sweet feed! The NO SMOKING signs were everywhere. Grain dust in the cobwebs and rough sawn lumber. Ol' Zeke would walk you around and show you the milling process without the fear of having your lawyer on speed dial.
Wow, your post just rounded out a wonderful image! I only had to add one more "little" detail to send me down the rabbit hole. Our local mill was family owned and run. "The Boys," steeped in hard work and wearing tattered flannels with the sleeves torn out, were a teenaged girl's dream!

And the forever line of grease and holes in the pant cuff from being stuck in the bicycle chain. Yup. I ruined a few "nice" pairs of pants that way.
You were too cool for these I assume?

I remember when water was free and now a lot of places charge for water.

Edit for typo
And air for your tires was free, too. Nowadays, it costs anywhere from 25 cents to a dollar-fifty to use one of those gauged air pumps ... when and if you can find one!

Air is still free, you just have to use a hand pump like those of us in the country did.

Yes, our mill was also family owned. 140 yrs, 1875 until 2015 when they closed.
