We redid our bathroom ourselves, with 2 exceptions. We paid for the electric line for the light/fan over the shower and to update the plug outlet to GFCI. (House was built 45 years ago.) We also bought custom sliding glass doors, measured, built, installed. We wanted the better quality doors (3/8", not 1/4" or 5/16"), and no way we were going to try to get glass doors home or install them ourselves. You know, I run numbers in my head on these things and I’m ballparking that material for these remodels is about, say, $3,000. Most will say in and out in one day so labor cost would be roughly $2,000 -3,000. Now I don’t know for certain having never gotten a quote but I think they are quoting these remodels out in the $15,000 to 35,000 range. If these numbers are remotely close to actual numbers these remodels are another example of homeowners that can’t do for themselves getting royally hosed by contractors.
All told, about $7700. The above two items were about $3K of that. Most of the rest of it was the shower enclosure/pan. We found a pattern we liked -- custom color, so $pecial order.
Since we'll live here until we die, we spent the money and got what we wanted.
