I'm such a jerk :(

It happens sometimes and there isnt anything u can do about it. Being a mailman for 9 yrs i have murdered probably seven zillion squirrels, fifty birds, and have never killed but hit 12 dogs. If i go hunting this yr i am putting squeely brakes and a flashing strobe light in my bullets. I almost hit a black bear six years ago. All this while travelling an average of 15 mph. At least you didnt leave it there to suffer like most people. And the dog owners are the worst. When tell them they just say" well that will teach them."

I agree with sfw2: You wouldn't feel bad if you didn't have a conscience! Just goes to show you're not a jerk

Accidents happen, well done for killing her and not leaving her to suffer!

So how did you kill her if I may ask?

Even if nobody stopped and claimed her, she wouldn't have gone to waste. There are a lot of other critters that would have made a meal out of her.

Please forgive yourself, you are not a jerk! The jerks are the folks who swerve to try to hit an animal.

Over the years I have hit a few small birds, a pheasant, two rabbits (one cotton tail and one jack rabbit), a skunk, a raccoon, four deer and a sheep. I felt bad for each and every one of them, even the raccoon. I hate those things but that is not how I would choose to kill one. I was lucky, they were all killed by the impact so I didn't have to put them down (except the sheep and one of the deer who both jumped up and ran).

Editing to add: In a lot of states - if not all - you would be required to have a license to posses a critter, even if it's road kill. So if you got pulled over and they saw it in your car, you could actually get a fine.

God, I still feel bad for her, wish I would've been paying better attention. Really glad she didn't look old enough to be a mom

So glad my kids weren't with me.. Although I told my eldest what happened when I got to the daycare.. (She could tell I had been crying and asked)

Today I will buy a knife to carry with me, this would've done the deed faster right ? Not sure If I would've been able to do it though, with a knife.. Were gonna take our "fire arms saftey course soon) But it was to busy time of day, to be pulling out a gun anyways)

I have hit 2 deer one limped off the other had to be put down by the sheriffs department. And lots of other small things,I feel bad but its part of life.
At least you did something, that alone shows your not a jerk.

Aww, what a horrible experience for you.
No, you are not a jerk. A jerk is the idiot that would have swerved to hit her on purpose.
You are a kind and compassionate human being.

Thats why we southern boys drive trucks. Here in Rock hill there are 45+ deer per square mile.We see deer creamed all over the roads daily. You have a heart, thats for sure, and you made a redneck happy.

in fact that would be me asking for that turkey.I would have put it down humanely, and then ate it.

Post note: we live on the side of a busy road from rock hill to chester and we get alot of road kill on our side yard.if there are ones still alive but suffering,I dispatch them quickly.Havent seen a deer on our sideyard yet, but it will feed us for a month or so.

If we hit an animal (esp deer) we're not allowed to shoot it, even though I have a consealed permit. We have to call the cops and hope they show up. So a tire iron comes in handy. Also, one time, I had to kill a fawn with my hands cause thats all I had, hardest thing I ever did. You also can't just take an animal home, esp turkey and deer up here without a posession permit from the cops. Rabbit and other small game they could careless about. I have taken many deer and other critters home for dinner, but only if I hit it or saw it hit in front of me.
