I'm very very bad. (but not anymore, I did good!)

Sorry, rainplace, I've never heard of them. It *sounds* nice--you know, nature is good and all that--but I have no idea.

It does sound rather like an impulse buy (I know, I'm failing miserably to enable). Maybe you can cancel that order, and take the money you save to order a couple juvenile females from Holderread for next Spring. You KNOW their quality is top notch. You can place the order now for 25% of the total cost, and pay the rest when your girls are ready.

I think, since you're planning to breed from your black runners (with specific goals in mind), that you will be much happier with definite show quality rather than... questionable.

On the other hand, if you find out this is an excellent breeding program, then maybe complete the order and just see what you get. What's another 10 ducks, right?

Lol, I already have my Holderread order in. 10 black runners and 20 silkies. I ordered 20 since you can't order by color. I would like to know more about this hatchery though, but if there are still auctions and fairs going on, and I can't find out anything more about the Natures, then I'll cancel it. I have a small window to do that.

Hi again--I just took a look at their site, and I would say, based on that minimal exposure, that I would hesitate to try to get show quality from them.

First, they are raising A LOT of different types of birds--which is usually a sign that they don't have expertise in any of them. Second, their information isn't strictly accurate--for instance, they describe the Runner as "on par with" the khaki campbell for egg laying. I think we all know Runners are good layers, but I wouldn't describe them as on par with Campbells. To me, that means they aren't really paying very much attention to their birds or, most importantly, to breeding for their abilities.

I'm guessing they are a production hatchery, like McMurray or Metzer, which isn't necessarily a BAD thing, but it probably won't produce the kind of birds you really truly want.

I've read that a lot about runners, that they are nearly close anyway with the khaki campbell. Don't runners lay an average of 280 a year during their prime? What's a khaki campbell doing?

Other than that though, I would agree with everything you said. Looks like I'm closer to cancelling.
