Imaginations Needed!!

Crazyhen already said what I wanted to warn about~lead paint. Take all you can and if you don't have a use for it right away, you will in time. What a neat idea though~to have part of the history of the house for your coop. Love it! You know we'll want pictures, right???

If you're reusing something which is painted with likey lead paint (like a shutter) and wish to keep the paint for 'rememberances'....wash the paint surface with water and a standard cleanser - let dry thoroughly - then cover with a minimum of three coats of polyurethane. Let dry for a week or two (to let all fumes out) prior to introducing to chickens. The poly will 'encapsulate' the lead paint pretty well. As long as the poly stays intact, the lead will not 'leach' through or into/onto your chicken areas.

If the whole house has to go - find the door-frame which has the kid's heights marked onto it - SAVE IT! Re-install it at your home, and use with YOUR kids. Wouldn't it be neat to compare to your dad or grandad?!

Thanks guys!! I am heading over tomorrow! I will be on the lookout for all sorts of stuff!!

I will keep you posted!!

We turned an old porch into a two room coop. We keep the food and bedding in the second room, as well as garden supplies. If I could, I would put cabinets and even a counter in there. If at all possible, you might consider a second room.
