Impacted Crop for a week

Wow! I am so happy this worked out for you. Do you think it was the coconut oil and treatment for sour crop that ended up healing her?

I’ve had a hen with crop issue for 6 weeks :( I first noticed she had sour crop 6 weeks ago when she was spewing foul liquid. I withheld food for 24 hours and gave her ACV in water. The next morning the crop was down and back to normal.

A few days later the sour crop returned. And so I’ve been doing this cycle for weeks on end now. I tried coconut oil, monistat and apple cider vinegar in water. I’ve done daily crop massages and withholding food for 24 hours ever once in a while.

A few days ago I was massaging her crop and noticed something pointy and very hard. I couldn’t break it apart and think is may be a piece of metal. Her repeated sour crop is definitely coming from impacted crop.

I’ve tried to make her purge but this hard piece is not coming out. I also have a crop bra on her now. I feel like I’ve tried everything :(

I’m really sorry you’re going through that. Three weeks were long enough for me and six weeks sounds so exhausting.

I didn’t end up giving coconut oil because my hen’s crop had already softened by the time I read about it. I gave her Monistat, about 5 ml in the morning and evening for two weeks after the first week of crop impaction, and slowly increased her wet feed as she improved.

Have you been limiting her food at all, aside from fasting her for a day?

When my hen seemed fine for three days after a week on Monistat, her crop suddenly felt full and squishy again one morning. I think it was because she had eaten too much feed in the main coop the day before.

So I kept her separated for a few more days and fed her small portions three to four times a day, just a little at a time. The next morning her crop was empty again.

For the last few days, I’ve been gradually increasing her feed like 50 g, 75 g, 100 g, then 125 g per day (She’s a big girl, so around 125 g or more seems right for her) even though her crop was empty in the morning, to make sure she can handle a full meal before letting her join the flock in the main coop.

I wonder if your hen might be eating too much too soon, before her crop can handle a full meal again, and if that’s why the sour crop keeps coming back.
Hope this helps and I really hope she gets better soon.

I’m wondering if I should even continue monistat since the underlying issue is impacted crop and the sour crop just comes from that.

Maybe she is eating too much all at once. I have been withholding food 24 hours and then the next day found either scrambled eggs or wet feed. The third day I’m letting her integrate back into the flock.

Maybe too soon? It’s just been going on for so long I’m at a loss :(
