Impacted crop. UPDATE **Reintroductuion to flock**

how is your girl? Is she eating? I can only get my girl to eat spinach. She is turning her nose up at everything people have suggested. Guess she can have what she wants for now.

There are quite a few places with pictures on the forum... I think it's a little touchy of a subject to have full instructions so you kind of have to piece it together. Here are some threads that I found to be VERY helpful.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=3591270 amazing picture of the crop.... made it easy to recognize... though mine wasn't purple hued.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=21291 the meat of the instructions for me came from here...

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=296632 wish I had read something like this before I embarked... but then again I may have wimped out too. Great info... amazing really!

Hope you don't have to do it

I lost my Light Brahma hen 10 months old, to eating hay & trying to help her to pass it, it ruptured her intestines and she bled internally! Just last week, Be very careful.

Hi everyone....it's been a long few days and I'm anxious to get back to let everyone know how it's going.

Sarjaysar was correct about my hen only wanting to stand up for a few days. She eventually did relax and lay down. I wish I had this information sooner. I might not have been so worried about her for the first 24 hours. Live and learn!

Hi eastbaychicks......re her wound I checked it every night and dabbed it with a little Betadine. I also gave her .3cc of Pen G for 4 days.

She is healing very well. As for food she is getting peeled grapes (do you know how hard it is to peel a grape?) smushed pasta and smushed scrambled egg. The third day I gave her everything above but only peeled half of the grapes. I also gave her free choice of chick starter and a tablespoon of minced chicken.

Her appetite is back to normal and she is acting like a chicken again. She started roaming around the house yesterday morning so I had to construct a little pen for her.

One thing I was surprised about was the amount of stringy poops she had for at least 2 days. It was full of fibers and smelled really bad. I picked some of the poops apart to see what they were comprised of and mostly it was partially digested hay. I'm still wondering where all that stuff came from.

I tried to reintroduce her this morning. Didn't go so well. I gave the other hens a treat and thought that would be enough to distract them when I took her out of the box I was carrying her in. Boy was I wrong!! Then hens were eating the treats and the Buff actually went to the dish to eat also and I thought "Oh.....that was easy. Famous last words" the next thing I new there was a full blown fight. One of the hens had her by the back of the neck, I separated them and then another one went after her and then she went after one of her own babies (5 months old now). I put her back in the box and she is in the kitchen again.

From what I read on BYC about reintroduction I'm going to use fencing to build her her own area in the coop in a corner. Hopefully they will get used to one another again in a few days and I can try again.

DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE REINTRODUCTION INFO FOR ME? I knew I should have bought goldfish instead.

Ewwww... I had such a hard time with introducing birds that I never fully removed her from the flock. They are still chasing her cuz they know she is weak... but she's not being pounced on...

Sorry to hear it! Do you let them free range? That is what worked for me. Just having them in the yard together, they avoided each other for a few weeks, but eventually they all started hanging out together. Sort of like, oh, guess this is just the thing? Good luck. You can always sneak her in the coop after dark and listen for any crazy noises to rescue her in the morning. That's what I'm planning to do if my little Honey ever starts improving. She is NOT doing well. Still quite weak, and is eating very very VERY limited amounts of food. A peck here, a peck there. But really I'm afraid I didn't get it all out.

I am new to this site and have a chicken with an impacted crawl as well. I have been reading about the wine and decided to give it a try. My husband has turned it upside down and it has vomited for the past 2 days. I have given her water so she would not get dehydrated. Alot of liquid, and no poop. I just administered 3cc of red wine. I think she is drunk. I am hopeful that this will cure the problem. I have taken away food and we will see in the morning. She just stands around not moving much and I feel so terrible for her. By the way she is a 6 week old black copper Marans. We really cant tell yet if it is a hen or rooster. Whatever it is, it has become the favorite as we are babying her. I will post tommorow with an update.
