If you read the whole story, it's actually a really interesting case and I would love to hear how it is resolved. It isn't just that the dog killed the 'coon, it's how the dog killed the 'coon and that the boys (including those filming) egged the dog on. I suspect the fact that the boy's family that owns the dog is in the business of "animal control" also has something to do with it. The prosecutor is NOT against protecting property or killing 'coons. It's all about how it's done.
Since I posted the thread, I guess I should weigh in with my opinion, too.
I agree with Barn Goddess in essence. My God, you'd think the guy would take into account there were witnesses if he was in the business of pest control, a very volatile and emotion-packed way to earn your living. I'd like to think everyone concerned just got caught up in the heat of the moment and idea of their pet dog doing his duty against a varmint and predator.
As a long-time advocate of SSS when there is no viable alternative to resolving a predator problem that threatens your flock, I'd have to say witnesses to your actions cause the third "S" to be an EPIC FAIL.
I think the case will be settled or thrown out. Interesting comments from the locals...
No where does it say that he know the coon was in there till the dog came out with it.. It also says his dad is in the raccoon business, does not say he is... Not everyone brings there work home with them an trains there kids to be there replacement.
Just playin' Devil's advocate here because that's my job but there have been an awful lot of animal snuff vids out there lately and I imagine that this prosecutor thinks he's going to make some kind of name for himself by prosecuting people who could possibly in this case since there is a video with people egging the dog on be made to appear like they're doing an animal snuff vid. It IS a cute little coon after all not some scary looking wolverine so you just might get some people to get upset about this. I'm betting there's some animal rights group out there egging on the prosecutor too. But I like to think up unlikely conspiracy scenarios to aid my job of Devil's advocate.
