Important News Story About Dog Attacking Raccoon

The prosecutors office in Jackson county has a history of taking animal cruelty cases to the extreme, those that live here know this.
They are and often receive a lot of media attention for these stories . Makes me wonder what would happen to me if a neighbor that didnt like me to much filmed me butchering my own chicken.
Would I be in a lot of trouble? I know my dogs have killed a few critters in the barn, does that make me a criminal? Or is it the fact some neighborhood kids filmed it the issue here?
I have not seen the cell phone footage. This is a interesting topic . Local thought seems to be leaning in the doesn't the prosecutors office have better things to do direction.

I am not trying to cause any problems. I just read the report. The prosecuter is way out of line. How did he know it was a coon in the garage. What if it had been someone there to hurt his family. I do not condone dog fighting, cock fighting. I do not see what this poor man did wrong. I look at it this way. If an animal comes onto my property to hurt something or someone it is fair game. Do I want to do it no. I love all animals(well except snakes, spiders and roaches

) Anything else is on it's own. If it is someones dog that I know I will let them know 1 time only. After that what happens happens. We have put to much love, time, and money into our chickens and goats to have something come and either kill or try to kill. He did no wrong.

Dumbist thing i ever heard,

Guess them folks would freak out on one of our wild hog hunts we have around here, we encorage our dogs to do what ever it takes to hold that hog till we het there to finish it off and there are tons of videos on youtube some good some bad.

Guess my dogs are in trouble "NOT
, they are here to keep things away from my flocks and do a darn good job.
They keep running this possum away and he kept sneaking back till they got tired of it and took care of the problem

And i praised them for it as well as encourage it they know what belongs and what don't.

as ridiculous as it sounds.... I can see WHY and HOW he's going to be prosecuted... it all depends on the video and what he was doing while the incident happens....

A friend who is following this story closely sent me this interesting link to the legal aspects of the case:

http://michigancriminalattorney.wor...-after-his-dog-kills-raccoon-criminal-lawyer/

Excerpt: While I disagree with the intentional killing of any animal, it appears as if the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office is setting a confusing precedent by choosing to charge this man with animal cruelty. MCL 750.50b defines an animal as any animal having a vertebrae, other than a human being. Obviously, a raccoon is an animal with a vertebrae, however, a mouse is also a vertebrate.

So watch out, you mouse-trappers out there, they'll be comin' for YOU next.

I agree 100%

Some of my dogs only purpose is for vermin control. I bought them for this reason.
Dog has served man in this capacity and many other roles for thousands of years and will continue to do so around the world and here on my farm. Not up for debate.
The laws city folks create don't allow for country living or even take it into consideration most of the time. Then we run into these types of cases. This in an example of a law with good intentions being abused if you ask me.

You mean I could get in loads of trouble for video taping my cat killing mice?

This is so ridiculous. Varmits and pests are a little different then say pets and livestock. Maybe he should sue Animal Control for allowing their wild animals to run loose? Since we are talking about ridiculousness anyway.

Americans have sat back and let this garbage come to be. How can people be this stupid, much less get paid for it? Years ago, such foolishness would have been settled in a back alley. Folks didn't have such long noses back then, or at least kept them pointed in a safe direction.

Funny how these idiots can "prosecute" a man whose dog killed a coon (I PROMISE I'M NOT TRYING TO DERAIL THIS THREAD----ONLY TRYING TO MAKE A POINT!!!), and we live in a country that sanctions abortion on a daily basis. Reckon the prosecutor rides around his neighborhood at night looking for cat-chasing dogs? Why is this considered "animal cruelty", but we have to sit by and watch if a hawk attacks our chickens? Is this not also animal cruelty?
